Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
hi everyone my name is Tony 35 years old and I've been type 1 for about 7 years now, overall my diabetes is very well Controled, but when I let my hair down every now and then and I indulge in a few beers I feel like my bladder is just none stop where I don't enjoy drinking anymore?? I seem to spend more time in the toilet then socialising with my friends ....? Is this the same for anyone else??? Help.

Welcome to the forum, Tony.
For me, there's no correlation between drinking alcohol and excessive peeing. But then, I rarely drink more thana pint or two of beer or a few glasses of wine. More than a few pints of beer would mean some extra toilet visits.

Hmm, with diabetes, excessive peeing is normally related to high blood sugar levels, which could well result from a lot of beer on a night out (or the snacks that go with the beer). Something you might consider is testing more regularly when you're out and, possibly alternating the beer with bottled water through the evening.

May I ask how old you are? Oops! shave read your post properly. Option one it is, too much carb/sugar probably best sorted with an with an extra unit or two of your fast-acting.

Hello and welcome. I don't drink very much, maybe a glass or two of wine for special occaisions or sometimes at the weekend if I fancy a drink. I find myself peeing for the whole country on just a couple of glasses. We are all different so it is not the same for everyone. I know I have a low tolerance to alcohol and am drunk quite quickly so don't drink very often.

Thx for the reply everyone, yeah I think you might be on to something, it's just been the last year that I have noticed it and it's been driving me a bit mad, struggling to socialise with Friends and family is never a good thing I have a friend who has been type 1 since birth and he drinks like a fish when I ask him about my problems he looks at me a bit strange!! Lol and when I speak to hospital about it? They say I need to see my doctor??? So even though we are all type 1 we are all different I suppose!!!!

Offer me a cider and keep it coming, more than the first half pint and I'll be in the loo, and it's your round by the way. (I do like cider!)

Offer me eg G&T or wine, and I'll drink both until I fall over, without visiting the loo. Well not both, never mix grape and grain - but 'either' LOL

Many years ago I used to work with someone who was a bit of a p*ss artist - he was always in the pub. Alcohol inhibits the release of an anti-diuretic hormone so the more you drink the more you need to go to the toilet. This workmate claimed he trained his bladder to work on what he called the 'third wave' which was described by him as follows - start drinking and when you hit the 'first wave' and need to go, don't go and hold on. Do the same for the 'second wave' i.e. hold on and don't go. When you hit the 'third wave' that's when you go. He reckoned for the rest of the night he was in the pub he wouldn't need to go to the toilet as frequently. The obvious flaw in his plan being if you leave it until the 'third wave' it might then be too late. 😱:D

As Matt says, alcohol naturally makes you pee more anyway. I've got one mate who's known as a pee a pint. I'm also personally familiar with the phenomenon of 'breaking the seal' ie. you're fine for a while, but once you start peeing when drinking, you start to go far more frequently.

So in some respects, it's totally normal and unrelated to diabetes. Having said that, are you testing your blood sugar when you drink? High blood sugar will also cause you to pee more, and many alcoholic drinks tend to be surprisingly high in carbs. If your blood sugar is high when you're drinking, you may need to start learning how to bolus for booze.

I would imagine it's normal if you're drinking such a volume of liquid, ie several pints, whether alcoholic or not, to need to pee frequently.
