Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I’ve met a new diabetic friend. He’s a taxi driver but, he & his wife used to run their own restaurant until recent years, when I heard he’d retired for health reasons: I now know what. He’s a type 2 on metaformin. His wife is a type 1.

It’s been windy & rainy the last few days so, didn’t walk to the health centre, as I normally do. Yesterday & today, got chatting & I told him about the weight I’m losing because of the Sweeteners I’ve cut out from my diet, that’s reduced my daily calories from 4000 to 1200 after reading a news item posted on facebook. He didn’t know our GP practice has a facebook page. I told him that even though I’ve left facebook I can still access & see the page. Very useful news items, tips & any warnings or health dangers on there.

He was also complaining that he couldn’t have a meter & strips on prescription when his wife was provided with 2. I told him that a lot of type 2 not on sugar lowering meds aren’t given them. He told me that he thought metaformin lowered his sugars. I explained that it didn’t & it was for insulin resistance to help the insulin he has work better.

Well done, @Lanny - it's surprising how little information diabetics are given by medical professionals. If you see him again, you could point him in the direction of this forum, and suggest he gets himself a Codefree meter and some strips from Amazon so he can keep a check on his sugars (though if his wife has 2 meters, he could maybe use one of hers instead!).

I had a look on there but they don't seem to have a great choice.

They don't have the lancets or test strips that I use/prefer.

But, each to their own, I guess.

If starting "fresh", you'd be able to choose everything that you'll need.
