I'm off out to a party in the next couple of weeks and would like to have a sociable drink! Anyone got any tips in how to manage your blood sugar and enjoy a drink as it will be my first time since diagnosis

Hi Nic.

Wine & spirits don't affect my bloods as long as the spirits are with a diet mixer.

If I have cocktails, cider or lager, I have a couple of units as it sends me sky high.

Before bed just make sure you have a carby snack without any insulin (I normally have toast)

Me personally, I also have a pint of water to every 2-3 drinks as well.

But have a lovely party & hope you find what doesn't send you too high

Alcohol makes your blood sugar drop a few hours?? later. It does this whether you are diabetic and on insulin or not, which is why people get hungry on the way home from the nightclub..... only if you're diabetic there's a danger of this sending you into a hypo overnight.

SO: My DSN says don't inject for the first drink (providing you don't drink molten sugar like vodka-and-coke) and inject HALF of what you'd inject for each subsequent drink if it had no alcohol in it.

Do you carb count? If you don't carb count that won't make much sense. In short the sugars in most alcoholic drinks (wine, beer etc) make your BMs go much higher straight after the drink. Wisky. gin etc have much fewer carbohydrates in them so you're less likely to get that rise.
But whatever you drink, the actual chemical alcohol means you should expect a drop in blood sugar later so be aware of this. If I'm not a little bit hyperlycaemic (high BM, around 10) when I go to bed, I tend to have a biscuit or two.... if I am and I've had alcohol, I don't correct or correct much less than usual.

Hope that helps...... and that you have a great night
