hi it's my nephews birthday party today (14 years old). All the family have been invited round for a family party tea. Food here consists of French stick, pizza, curly fries or potato wedges, mini sausages, chicken nuggets. Impossible for me to carb count, first time I've tackled this type of menu since being put on basal bolus. Is it best for me to test, take say 4 units novo rapid, test again after an hour and if high bolus another 3-4 units. Any advice greatly appreciated
Jo
Personally I would take my own food and explain that you need tight control at the moment until your readings have leveled out. I would not have a problem with anyone who had a health condition that required 'special' dietary needs.
Give them a ring up front and warn them that you are taking your own food.
I went to a do a few weeks back. I stuck to the sausages, chicken wings & had quiche but left the pastry. My bloods still went up more than expected though. I blamed the sausages. They tasted very cheap.
Is food provided by hosts at home or at a restaurant? If it's at a restaurant, you should be able to look at menu online. If it's at home, then testing to discover current blood glucose levels, guesstimating carbohydrate content of what you are going to eat and having some insulin, then testing again and having more insulin if neede should work OK. It's a party, after all, so doesn't happen every day. That's roughly what I did for my Dad's 80th celebration on Sunday. Mum supplied paper serviettes and plastic bags for anyone who wanted to take cake home instead of eating with tea / coffee. Let's just say that having cake for lunch today was very nice 🙂
I went to my mum's 70th birthday celebrations a couple of weeks ago and just threw the diet out of the window for a couple of days as I figured in the grand scheme of things it wouldn't make much difference. Of course as a T1 your circumstances are different but my family did ask if I needed anything special to eat, so I'm sure yours will be happy to accommodate you if required
Thanks everyone, would have offended my brother if hadn't eaten something and everything was carb heavy so got various bits on plate, carb count best as could, took a few units insulin, had a bit of birthday cake ( couldn't resist!). Waited 11/2 hours tested again and took some more units based on that reading. Still high but couldn't cause an upset on a nephews birthday
