Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello fellow diabetics!

My name is Emma and I am conducting my undergraduate dissertation project in psychology on diabetes distress. I would be incredibly grateful if you could take the time to participate in my study by filling out the following questionnaire, which shouldn't take more than 20 minutes of your time.

The only requirements to participate are that you must be over 18 years old, and you must have either Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.

Seeing as it's diabetes awareness month, it would be great if you could pass the link on to other diabetics who would be inclined to participate in order to spread the word. If you have any questions at all, please let me know! I am more than happy to discuss the background to the study and our hypotheses. 🙂

Thanks so much!

Thank you so much, Donald! I really appreciate everyone who takes the time to help out 🙂

Emma- Hi- just wondered why the 18 age limit - If children can move to adullt care at 16 - why not 16?

Done. Well designed and interesting questions.

Please let us know the outcome, we never hear from folk who submit these things and it would be nice to do so.

Delb t: unfortunately my university has very strict ethical rules concerning people under the age of 18 which would greatly limit the scope of the study. Believe me, I am 100% of the opinion that adolescents and young people face these same difficulties, and if I can get onto a Masters course to continue doing research I am particularly interested in looking at the transition from juvenile to adult care, and the difficulties that "emerging adults" (age 16-25) face during and after that period.

AlisonM: of course, I will definitely keep you updated with my final results and conclusions! My dissertation deadline is in March so look out for it after that 🙂

Completed the survey.

Done it. 🙂

Done. I had to laugh, it's quite subjective.

I have eaten healthfully IMHO 6 days out of 7. I defo wouldn't class the Eton Mess I had for pudding last night in the pub at the meal for grand-daughter's 16th birthday, as healthful any way you can look at it. I clocked it at 60g carb on it's own! And it was about right according to my meter. I only do about 90 or 100g a day normally! Furthermore it was really nice too - as were both glasses of Merlot.

Healthful for me includes plenty of meat, with fat if there isn't too much, preferably crispy, fried or grilled bacon, fried boiled or poached eggs, plenty of cheddar and other full fat cheese and an orange a day, butter on my white - or brown - bread, crispbreads, crackers, scones etc, plenty of veg including spuds of some sort and full fat mayo on my salad. Some pasta, some rice - all white thanks. I eat most things, just not all on the same days or few days.

And the essential occasional drink of Lucozade - if I drink that then it's absolutely 100% healthful !

On how many of the last SEVEN DAYS did you eat high fat foods such as red meat or full-fat dairy products?
I don't believe fat is unhealthy. I eat lots of vegetables and cook from scratch every day. I do not eat processed foods. Some of the questions are difficult to answer because they don't apply.
On how many of the last SEVEN DAYS did you test your blood sugar the number of times recommended by your health care provider?
I test regularly to my own schedule. No HCP has ever had any influence regarding testing or prescribing doses. That is my own responsibility and always has been. I am diligent with my diet and my doses and my testing regime.

Thank you again to those who have participated!

And my gratitude to those people who are willing to post their comments here as well. I am aware of the subjectivity especially of the self-care questions, and that some of them may not apply to each diabetic's lifestyle and healthcare regimen. This will be taken into account in the analysis and particular questions may be screened out. I am particularly aware that a high-fat diet is not necessarily unhealthy or undesirable for a diabetic, and I agree with the previous comments that the occasional Eton Mess or indulgent treat does not spoil what is otherwise a healthy diet that keeps your diabetes in check.

Thank you for the comments everyone, they have been very helpful!

Best,
Emma
