Paracetamol - back pain

I've had lower backache which has slowly got worse over the course of the week; using a heat cream and taking paracetamol every 4 hours; however, is it ok to take paracetamol on a regular basis - its starting to ease now but obviously taking things easy....

My dad thinks its sciatica (excuse the spelling)
My Mom thinks its arthritis (runs in the family,,,:()

I think its years of bad pasture....(sat behind a desk 8hrs a day); slouchy sofa...(no back support)...🙄
 
As long as you follow the guidelines on the information leaflet you should be OK. If the pain continues or returns though, you should see your doctor for an MOT.
 
I had a disc problem and took paracetamol for about a year. Make sure you don't go over the max dose per day. My gp would write me a private prescription so I didn't need to go to the shops twice a week to stock up.

Paracetamol every 4 hours is too much - maximum 8 x 500mg tablets in any 24 hour period. However, it's Ok to take other painkillers at the same time as paracetamol, as long as you follow guidelines in patient information leaflets . Non steroidal anti inflammatories, such as ibuprofen, are particulalrly good for musculo-skeletal pain, such as arthritis.

The aim should be to reduce pain so that you can keep active.

Also, worth considering consulting an osteopath for back pain.
 
You should take Ibuprofen for aches and pains, Paracetemol for headaches. Ibuprofen is anti inflammatory.

If you know anyone with a Bookers cash and carry card you can buy it in bulk there.
 
Take care when taking ibuprofen if it's for more than a few days, and don't take it without checking with the doc if you have stomach problems. A friend's husband used it for several weeks to treat a sports injury and ended up in A&E with gastric bleeding. On the plus side, if he'd taken that many paracetamol, it would have been liver damage!
 
Thanks everyone for your responses; I haven't taken more than 4 tablets in any 24hrs as I'm reluctant to take too many (I only really like taking 2 a day); the heat gel seem's to be working a little and I'm definately keeping moving... Amanda xx

I second LeeLee, be careful with Ibuprofem. Last time I needed a transfusion I was in hospital for a week and needed 6 units of blood. They were convinced I had taken Ibuprofen and had a stomach bleed. I am now on the highest dose of Lansoprazole to try and protect my stomach from any more bleeds. I was discharged with the instructions that I was NEVER allowed to take anything with Ibuprofen in it. So if you are taking anything with Ibuprofen be careful or use Ibugel. Also try hot packs on your back. I find they work with Cocodamol for back pain nothing worse than a sore back. My husband has sciatica and the pain travels down his leg. Hope it gets better soon 🙂

Thank you - I never touch Ibruprofen and the heat gel cream is working - I am going to buy a few hot packs though xx

Good Morning, Beware of cocodamol it gives terrible constipation, I took it for 1 week after op. on arm and OMG I took Andrews and Lactolose (bot at the same time)I was so bunged up eventually the heavens opened but it really was terrible , good luck
