While snowboarding on Friday I fell and landed heavily on my ribs and they are now extremely sore (a trip to the GP will be in order if things don't improve over the next few days). I have been taking Ibuprofen tablets to ease the pain but have noticed that the information leaflet states you should discuss their use with a doctor or pharmacist.

Similarly I have also noticed that a lot of the cold/flu remedies also state that you should not take them if you are diabetic.

So I was wondering what everybody else takes to ease pain symptoms or cold/flu symptoms?

since i have been diabetic when i have a cold/flu i just grin and bear it. i take paracetamol to ease the aches but just put up with the rest of the symptoms. i always used to take day nurse when i had a cold but i think you can't take them because they dry up the runny noses etc and they can cause de-hydration. i asked my doctor if i could take them but he said no. i try to make sure i drink plenty including oj as vitamin c is good for colds. sorry i can't help more but maybe someone else can suggest something else

yes matts unfortunetly i do the same as fairy does, I just put up with it and take painkillers to ease the aches

I use lemsips or Beechams Hot lemons. When I asked advice I was told stick with a reputable make as the sugar in them would make very little difference.

If you are unsure and don't want to take a risk see your doctor if you can get an appointment or ask your pharmacist. Lots of people find NHS Direct helpfull.

I didnt know these remedies were not for us! This is news to me! Goes to show I should read the small print....!

The only thing I have changed is I buy Strepsils now that are sugar free which I didnt know about before.

I use ibuprofen with no ill effects.

For colds/coughs I think some of the medicines have honey or sugar in to coat the throat but you can get sugar free varieties in any pharmacy. I would go for these since my BGs seem to be higher when I am ill although some people have reported having lower sugar when ill so its down to the individual.

the only sugar free remedies for sore throats etc is robitusens and it is horrid!!! i just grin and bear it nowadays lol as for pain killers etc i cant use ibuprofen but i use diclofenac and codliver oil instead and also i use paramol as it is co codamol but sold over the counter.

I use any medications I would have used before. I prefer ibuprofen to paracetamol generally. I'm testing my blood sugars and correcting when i'm ill anyway so any effects will be quicly noticed and sorted.

Same. Will have lots of questions to ask at my diabetic clinic in a few weeks time!

There are others - Tixylix and Benylin for example although they may be for children, also stores may make own brand versions. Strepsils also make a sugar free version but these are cough sweets not liquid. I find all medicines are pretty grim but they aren't supposed to taste nice, just make you better.

Lol so true. Whenever I have a stomach ache I use that Andrew's salt stuff. Tastes utter vile but it works! 😎

I made a point of going to the Lloyds pharmacy in town and not Boots as we thought they being a smaller place would be easier to get on with and to have problems sorted out. If I feel ill in a cough/cold kind of way I'll just go to them and ask them for suitable drugs for my diabetic soul. :D
