The BG reading of 23 is not an immediate worry if your ketone levels are low but longer term you don't want to have levels in the 20s for months on end. I hit 27 one night before I got insulin and spent all night drinking pint after pint of water and got it down to 22 by morning, but I alternated between the kitchen to top up my glass and the toilet to empty my bladder all night and I felt pretty knackered by the next morning, not least because my heart had been thumping like a steam train all night! High BG levels are not fun but it's the ketones you really need to worry about, as they make the situation an emergency, so it is good that yours are just 0.2. Do keep testing because they can just suddenly start to develop.
As we have already discussed, we can all see that you do have several red flags for Type 1 and age has nothing to do with it so your nurse (and GP) clearly have limited knowledge of diabetes. It is a common misconception amongst doctors re Type 1 being a childhood condition, so if you are a mature adult they assume it must be Type 2. As a result of their lack of knowledge, I would agree that you would not want those tests (GAD and C-pep) done by your GP/nurse as they do not have the knowledge to do the tests correctly or interpret the results and the tests are unfortunately not always a clear positive or negative, so it really needs to be overseen by an experienced diabetes consultant.

So, more bloods done at weekend. The Results have come back and are showing as 128 which is up considerably from 75 in Sept. Increased now to 2000mg of Metformin and 40mgs of Gliclazide but still reading between 14-19 throughout the day on finger prick tests…Just can’t get that down despite everything I’m doing. I can’t lie, it’s getting me down now …

Do you know what the further blood tests are. As the fact that you are on those medications, have lost a considerable amount of weight and presumably have reduced you carbohydrate intake puts a huge red flag for you being Type 1 so I hope those were tests to check, c-peptide and GAD antibodies. If not then you may need to chase the GP up and ask for a referral to a specialist diabetic clinic.

Ohh this is almost word-for-word what has happened to me. I've just started on insulin.

Well…… I was eventually put on 2000 mgs of Metformin and 40mgs of Gliclazide… made me feel absolutely dreadful - took myself off of everything ( I know that sounds drastic and I’m ABSOLUTELY NOT saying anybody should do this ) but my BG have gone completely back to normal ??? I test myself at least 6 times a day and I’m constantly between 5.8 and 7.5 - weight has stayed off. I ditched the meds 3 weeks ago now and am back at the diabetic nurse this afternoon - I’ve no idea what she is going to say but I’ve never felt better. I know my HbA1C was 128 in January but I’m hoping when I can do it again in April it will be dramatically lower.

I’ve absolutely no clue what’s going on - obviously lost a lot of weight, I don’t eat bad foods anymore but just all seems so odd ???

Has anyone else heard of this sort of thing ?

That does seem a dramatic change so well done, makes you wonder if they mixed up the blood sample/.
I hope your diabetic nurse will be ultra pleased.
