Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi everyone. I was diagnosed tupe 1x18 montgs ago.I've just been for a check up with my DSN. My HBa1C has come down to 6.2 snd she's discharged me back to GP care. I'm really pleased but also a little bit scared without the additional support. Does that make sense?

Well done for getting your diabetes under control.... at least I hope that your HbA1c reflects good control as I believe that is not always the case with Type 1... lots of hypos and hypers can cancel each other out and still leave you with a good 3 month figure, but presumably this is not the case for you.
I am quite surprised that the DSN has discharged you. I kind of assumed that as Type 1s we would be under their care indefinitely. I can certainly see how you would feel a little vulnerable being cast off so to speak, but I guess you can always be re referred by your GP if necessary. Do you have a good relationship with the nurse at the practice who supervises the diabetics? She is my first point of call and is really approachable and friendly, so I can ring her if I have a problem that I need to discuss. She is not a knowledgeable as a DSN but at least she is local and easy to contact and I don't feel like I am wasting a doctor's time if I need some reassurance.

Welcome to the forum, freesia, and welcome to the club! I was discharged back to my GP once my levels were stable, and I’ve been seen by the nurse at my practice ever since. What she knew about Type 1 when I first met her could be written on a very tiny postage stamp! (She knows a lot more now I’ve educated her!) I got most of my knowledge and tips from this forum, and also from the BERTIE online carb counting course. Have a browse round the forum, and shout if there’s anything specific you want to know, someone will always be along to answer.

Thank you . I've had very few hypers/hypos lately so hopefully it is better controlled. I do feel more confident adjusting insulin/ratios and carb counting although eating out still worries me a bit..its the estimating i still need to be more confident with. I have done Bertie and the DSN said i can be re referred any time if i have any problems so fingers crossed all goes well from here

In that case, good luck to you and I hope you don't need to see her again or at least not for a very long time! You should still get annual checks for your HbA1c, feet and retinal screening though I believe.

I'll still get all the usual checks annually and if i'm concerned about anything i can ring, although it depends on what it is as to whether they can help or whether i need to be referred back as i am no longer their patient. At least having access to the forum will help with any questions.

Yes, some places do this. I'm no longer under the care of the hospital's team, but like you I've got a phone number and email address, and apparently one of the DSNs visits my GP surgery once a month (so presumably I could get an appointment there if I wanted, though they also visit the local hospital regularly which is 5 minutes walk away). And they're monitoring the 6-month Libre trial thing. (It's admittedly a little different for me since I've been diabetic for decades, but the same principle applies: if you need some help contact them.)

Evening Freesia,

Welcome to the club and we’ll done on the control, I aspire to such levels, I will get there !

Please don’t be scared about not having “the additional support” you’ve got more support from experts in this forum than you could wish for.

Don't make my mistake and don’t ask!

Have a good evening

Oslo

Thank you Oslo. You will get there i'm sure. My levels were very up and down last week due to being away on holiday/balancing exercise and insulin/carb counting things i hadn't cooked myself. Back to usual now so hopefully things will settle down again. These forums are really helpful when help and support is needed so thanks to everyone who has replied.

Hi @freesia , welcome to the forum. You have done very well in such a short time. I guess it must be scary being discharged back to your Gp practice, I trust you will develop a good relationship with the nurse. Over the years I have had several nurses and found I have had to train all but my newest one in my diabetes, what I am trying to say is, don’t be worried about training your nurse in your diabetes as the standard info does not work for everyone, also they are far more used to T2.

We have many knowledgeable members here who will be only to happy to help with info and advice usually based on what has worked for them.

I hope this helps.
When dining out I have found the carbs and cals book very good , I believe there is a large book a pocket book and I think an app, it has helpful pics of meals with nutritional info so you can more easily work out the carbs, also some restaurants have nutritional info online or available if asked for when ordering.

When eating out I learned the hard way, not to bolus till my meal had arrived, I was in a restaurant where the meal usually arrived quickly , one time it didn’t and I was on either the fruit juice or full fat Coke long before my meal arrived.
