Hi

I haven't been diagnosed with diabetes or pre diabetes yet but have had gestational diabetes three times

My dad was diagnosed type 2 when he was 39 and my brother was diaganosed two years ago at the age of 41.

My brother keeps telling me to go to be checked out but I haven't got time at the moment so I decided to do a home glucose tolerance test.

My readings are

Fasting blood 6.5
Half hour reading. 14.1
One hour reading 14.4
One and half hours 15.3
2 hours 15.4

Can anyone advise on these figures please x

Hi I replied on your other post.
Hi again. They do seem rather high, did you fast for 12 hrs and wash your hands before each test.
I am assuming that you have not been diagnosed but do have some symptoms ? The best thing for you to do now is arrange an appointment with gp , so s/he can arrange blood tests.
The sooner you have a diagnosis the better.
.........

Please make the time to visit your gp to do the appropriate tests , your health is important

Yes did fast. Was probably closer to 13 hours. And yes I washed my hands

Only symptoms I have i extreme tiredness ( which is what prompted my brother to suggest I get checked because that's the only symptom he had). I gained abit of weight that I can't shift but thought you where meant to lose weight if you had diabetes and I have constant headaches but not sure if that is related x

Diabetes can also be diagnosed by a single blood test, taken from vein, to give HbA1c result, which is an approximation of blood glucose levels over past 12 weeks or so.
Weight loss is usually a symptom of developing type 1 diabetes, while weight gain is more usually associated with type 2 diabtes, but you need to see a GP to discuss all symptoms and medical history along with blood (and / or urine) tests.

I have a nhs health check up on Wednesday morning. Was gonna cancel. I will go now. But would this kind of check up be enough to show what I need it to x

If you describe your symptoms and concerns, I expect that whoever does the check would do a finger prick test (tell them when and what you ate) and / or urine test, and probably take venous blood to check HbA1c. Then you would have to phone or come back for results.

I would definitely go for that lifestyle check. My GP surgery takes hba1c as a given in "lifestyle checks". I would really find time to do this because fasting blood 6.5 seems quite high. I believe it should be under 6.

I don't want to frighten or upset you but it is better to know if you have diabetes so that GP can start controlling it with medication or lifestyle changes, insulin if Type 1 etc.

I went to my health check. I don't believe they did the hba1c. About two hours ago the doctors called and said I need to go for a repeat test for glucose and said I could go fetch a print out says plasma glucose not hba1c. And shows 15.3. Got to have it repeated on Monday but not sure if that's another test like I ad or a hba1c x

That does not sound like hba1c to me Lindy. not sure what plasma glucose is. Others here who are more experienced will know.

There is an oral glucose tolerance test where you are given a glucose drink and they wait to see what the result of it is. The only other one I know is fasting blood glucose where you would not have anything to eat or drink for about 8-12 hours I believe. Did you have to starve for this test?

I'm pretty certain that serum plasma glucose test is a random blood sugar test. How long after you last ate was the blood drawn?

It would appear somewhat elevated, so I imagine the second test will be the HbA1c, which could well confirm things. Fingers crossed for your next test.

Knowledge is power.
