I have just tested 2 optimum xceed monitors and got the following readings for the high and low test solutions:

Main meter. 2.6 And. 14.9

Spare meter. 2.7. And. 13.7

Which meter should I use?

Provided that the results you got are in range for the test solutions you can use either. The test solution should have an indication with it as to what results you should expect to get with it.

If the results are out of range for what is expected for the test solution you could call the Abbott's care line.

Have checked pre bed on both meters 8.4 and 8.9 - do I need a 3rd meter??

Only if you want to confuse yourself. You are likely to get a different reading if you test yourself twice with the same meter.
Meters are only accurate to +/- 10% at best, and this includes the test strip. I would expect the test strip to be the thing that causes the variation and not the meter.
Tests I have done indicate that meters appear more accurate below 5mmol.

Choose one meter and stick with it until it breaks.
I have a second meter that stays at my bedside or goes with me in the car as it consistently reads the lower of the 2 meters but it's a different make than my primary meter.
