I've been advised not to just swallow my Creon, but to open the capsules and mix the contents with Apple sauce and consume that before I eat. The idea being that the cApsules take so long to release the contents that the Creon doesn't do me much good, so there is some sense in removing the capsules. However it's a mouthful of grit. Ugh :(
Has anyone got any bright ideas of anything else I could mix it with? My brain has just gone blank.
For those who don't know, the contents are lots of tiny balls which you don't want to chew cos they give you mouth ulcers.
I think I might feed the Diabetes Fairy some Creon when she's visiting 😛

When do you take the creon? If it is at breakfast perhaps you could take it with museli, or if it is later in the day like lunch time perhaps you could have them in soup? Or can you just have them before you eat proper? I hope you find a solution that works for you or you're happy with.

I presume the apple sauce recommendation is because it's thick and slides down easily without chewing, so you don't notice the grit. Difficult to think of an equivalent that doesn't have equal amounts of sugar in it. Mashed banana or weetabix came to mind. Porridge? Thick plain Greek yogurt? A thick veg/fruit smoothie? ( sorry, not sure what your normal diet is, or what spikes your blood sugar, so none of the above may be suitable)
I would definitely introduce the contents of the capsules to the DF!

Very boringly I have to take the Creon every time I eat or drink - apart from water and black coffee.

It's the sugar thing that is a real pain

Yoghurt or mashed banana are good ideas.

I must confess when I was faced with this I could have screamed. I'm trying very hard to reduce those post prandial spikes and everything seems to mean more insulin. I'll never look at apple sauce in the same way again - and that's after just 24 hrs!

I'm on creon but I take them whole. I do however also take mesalazine granules which come in a sachet. You put these on your tongue and wash down with water.

How about cottage cheese? 🙂

unfortunately the quantities of Creon I take are vast (at least 8 x 25000 at a time!)and if I 'fill up' with water I've no room for the food.
cottage cheese is certainly a possibility

thanks for the suggestions

its somewhat weird having apple sauce (currently) as a starter for everything I eat and drink. Apple sauce before a latte...yummm.... not😱

Yes it would take a reasonable glass of water to wash 8 down.

@pottersusan
Sorry to hear about your condition. I hope you're doing better now. My mother is somewhat in the same boat as you. She suffers from Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency. Unfortunately, she is allergic to Creon and Agna, causing her to break into severe hives when she ingests either. We are not sure whether the allergy is to the capsule or the micro-mini globules inside the capsules. Creon website says that you can break open the capsule and ingest it with acidic food. We are thinking of insert one globule into a grape and digesting it with orange juice. This will test for allergy and hopefully, the grape will act as an enteric coating.

Do you have a better suggestion?
