Hi everyone. I’ve been a member of the forum for a couple of months now, but I wanted to wait until the ‘Diabetes in Schools’ board on the forum had been launched before introducing myself properly.

Two of my children have type 1 diabetes. They were diagnosed about nine years ago a few months apart. I have previously volunteered for DUK on their ‘Care in School Helpline’. I did this for a couple of years, from soon after it opened until it was taken ‘in-house’ at the end of last year. It has given me an obsession with how children with diabetes are cared for in school and I hope to take this forward in other ways in the future. I joined the forum when I heard that there were plans to include a schools section on it. I do other diabetes related things as well, including being a Parent Rep for the West Midlands in the National CYP Diabetes Network (I’m currently serving as Co Vice-Chair of the National Families Group in the Network) and being Chairman of the local support group.

I look forward to making a contribution on this board in particular, but also on other boards too.

Hi Billy, welcome to the forum 🙂 I am sure you will bring a lot of expertise to the forum with your experience, hope your children are doing well now 🙂 It must have been so much to take in when the second was diagnosed just as you were getting to grips with the first 😱

Let us know if you have any queries and we will be happy to help, looking forward to hearing more from you 🙂

Welcome Billy. Great to have you on here.
Like you I am keen to help staff and pupils in schools to understand about Diabetes.
I do this by giong in and doing lessons with groups of pupils, and also contributing to training days for staff.
I have also started to tap into other children’s groups.
