Greetings all,

I am currently conducting a survey as part of my MSc (Hons) in Health Psychology.

The research is based on well-being in individuals with type 1 diabetes and whether self-perceived glycaemic control, diabetes knowledge, locus of control (whether control is in the individuals control or others) and religious beliefs are correlated with well-being and also to investigate how well these factors can predict well-being in individuals.

The link for the survey is: https://qtrial.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_8jnutdyb5FAj17n

This research would be very beneficial for the diabetic community by successfully measuring an individuals beliefs in these areas we can advise where the health system needs improving in relation to health professionals communication or diabetes education programmes. There is also a ?20 raffle for an Amazon voucher for those who complete the survey.

If you want to contact me for any reason please do so via Private Message

Thank you for your time.

Done 🙂 but forgot to note down the code to enter me into the draw for the voucher - doh! :(

All done, hope its useful to you......

I tried to do it but some of the questions I felt like a fraud completing

Q6 is a bit of a muddle - nothing like enough detail to be able to answer!

What ones specifically.......?

I don't smoke so I don't know how it affects diabetes, feet & the HBA1C questions, I've always been under 7 (in old terms) so my consultant has never given me targets so if I put what I think for those questions, then ok but I don't know the proper targets

I did it earlier, found it to be competent. Have to admit that I'm not at all religious so the final set of questions all got the biggest negative answers from me 😉

Hopefully, the researcher will be able to incorporate this feedback into their research 🙂

You pick up a good point there as some of the questions do apply less when you don't actually have physical experiences with things such as smoking.

As my long-term girlfriend has type 1 diabetes I have always been interested in trying to find ways to make it easier to live with diabetes and for it to be less of a burden to her. This research is only one piece of the puzzle (hopefully PhD next 😛) to help discover whether people believe their control lies with others or in their own hands, and hopefully discover that knowledge can predict well-being, which could aid further education programmes for individuals with diabetes and significant others.

Thank you to those of you who have taken your time to look at my survey, it is very much appreciated.

I'll happily fill it in but I fail to see what religious beliefs have to do with diabetes control!

I'm glad someone else thinks the same way as I do. 🙂

The religion beliefs is a bit of an odd one, but I was advised to put this in so I can disprove that it has any relation to control and hopefully strengthen the relationships with the other items on the questionnaire. I do agree with you both on this though, I don't believe it does (I'll be shocked if there is a relationship when I analyse the data).

Done... question 11 was tough to answer though as its so dependant on type of exercise, levels before exercising etc...

Agree with many others I found the religion questions weird... and not really related in my personal opinion!

I'd be interested to see the results/your thesis at the end if possible?

I think it will be next to impossible to see what effect 'religion' has as it's so subjective & you can't be that sure from the questions as to what proportion of respondents actually have a faith or follow a religion (not necessarily the same thing!).

Eg: person A is very 'religious' in that they routinely go to church / the mosque, but their personal view point is fatalistic - ie I have no control as my fate is pre determined, why bother going beyond the minimum effort as 'God willing' that will be enough.

Person B on the other hand has a faith view based on a God who gave us brains & hands for a reason, & so feels they should do their best with the gifts they have (including finding the best healthcare team they can etc) & trusting to God for whatever is left over that they personally can't directly influence.

It then gets even more complicated in that say, person A.1 is very laid back, 'lucky' to have a straightforward life & finds control is good without much effort from them - so they feel good & things tick along nicely. Person A.2 however isn't so fortunate, their control is more complicated, they feel helpless & unable to influence things & a downward spiral of poor control & depression begins. Just to give 2 off the top of my head ideas about one of those subsets.

And that's not even scratching the surface of all the different personslity types, faiths, understandings of God (from the assumption of big mean old git smiting on whim, to the best friend, the big vending machine of miracles & every stage of the spectrum between the extremes), approaches to faith & how they are influenced by socio-economic circumstances...& of course all this is speculation based on the secular assumption that it's all made up & only a theory to be shot down or dismissed as fairy tales or nonsense.

My personal take is that he's not some a******e dishing out complications to 'try my faith' but neither is he some kind of meaningless vending machine dispersing miracle cures if you manage to fi d the right prayers, but I know people with a wide range of views lol...

Not meaning to bash the survey, just trying to suggest it might be a bit more complicated than might at first seem...

I will publish a summary of the results when I'm finished on the forum so you all can see what I found.

I think beliefs are so interesting and they are as you said very complex to categorise a believer and non-believer because every religion and everyone's motivations are different towards religion because it is such a subjective topic.

This survey is not entirely based on beliefs of God as such more that if you believe in God how much do you believe your fate is changed by God.

These are great points though and I will touch on them when discussing my results. I've put my survey on a few other website and this is by far the most interactive for people to speak their opinions.
