If your ratio was one unit of insulin to every ten grams of cabs (1:10) then had to add on an extra two units of insulin what insulin to carb (i:c) ratio would this be please?

Also would like to know this for marking down as a diary entry.

Thank in advance for any replies 🙂 x

It depends on how much carb you ate to warrant the 2u extra. 🙂

If you've eaten say 80g and injected 8u. Then had to add 2u to correct, this would imply you need 10u for 80g, which is 1:8.

It would work out differently for a different amount of carb.🙂

Or could it be that the extra 2 units is needed regardless of carbs due to basal being slightly inadequate- especially in a situation where increasing BI might increase the risk of hypos at other times especially nights

Hi Robster65,

Thanks for the reply.

So if I had eaten 50g and injected 5u (1:10) (1u to every 10g cho) then had to add 2u what would the i:c ratio be then please?

or maybe 40g and injected 4u?

Spot on!!

I'm needing to add the extra 2 units on deffinately with my evening meal time dose.

Simple. You've taken 7u to cover 50g. 50/7 = 7, approx, so that's an approximate ratio of 1:7

In which case, you need to do a basal test to check how far out your basal is and adjust it until your pre-teatime BG is much the same as your pre-lunchtime BG. Then you know your sbasal is keeping you steady across the afternoon and evening.

Only then can you adjust your ratios to cover the rise from your meals.🙂

This is exactly what I'm looking for, how to work out & write the ratio down.

I'm so used to doing 10u to cover 50g. 50/10 = 5 so a ratio of 1:10.

When I had my diabetic review today (which will be another thread) my DSN said she thinks I could do with deffinately upping my teatime dose and maybe even my lunchtime dose then to decrease my bedtime / BI.

Thank you very much for all your help on the working out of my new i:c ratio.

Where would I be without you people on this forum. Probably back at school working out my maths lol! 😱 😱

This is where the DAFNE thing of using CPs gets confusing. I think more of us use the ratio of insulin to carbs, whereas the DAFNE ratio is a ratio of insulin to CPs.

If you are taking 10 units to cover 50g carbs that's a ratio of 1:5, not 1:10. However in Dafne language it's 1 unit to half a CP.

So for tonights tea it was 6u to cover 40g. 40/6 = 6 approx so a ratio of 1:6? Hope that's correct eek!
