Hello all. Hope you are all well. Apologies for not being around lately but wanted to provide a little information. Please note that this information only relates to me and my little experiment.
I have been taking omoprazole for the last 2 years without any problems. Recently I decided to wean myself off them. I have noticed that my waking BG levels have gone from the mid 5s to mid 4s. So as a test I took a couple of doses for a few days and my waking BGs jumped back to the mid 5s. I am now certain it was the omoprazole tho there is no mention of it in the leaflet.
I just thought I'd mention it as every little helps.

Hi @Leonora
That is very interesting. I've been prescribed lansoprazole (a similar PPI) for quite a while to treat GORD. Since changing to low carb eating it has improved a lot and the doctor has halved my dose.
I'm hoping to stop using it soon. My average waking levels for August & September (when I was on full dose) were 6.3 & 6.5. October's when I was on half dosage was 5.7. So there may be something in what you say.

At the last meeting with my DSN, I told her that I thought lansoprazole was affecting my readings and she suggested taking it at night instead of first thing in the morning.
I tried that for a couple of weeks but it didn't seem to make any difference. So perhaps it's not when you take it but the dosage (if any) that you take that is affecting the levels.
I remember way back in September doing a Google search to see if there was any evidence but didn't find anything concrete. Perhaps some of the others on here can enlighten us further.🙂

On the other hand, of course, it could be that fiendish Diabetic Fairy taking the mickey.😱

Yes Meetoo, it's very strange. I intend to keep a very close eye on it for the next few weeks. Btw my lunch today would usually give me a BG reading in the low 7s but today it was 6.2. I would love to know if anyone has any info on this phenomenon. Hope it's not that fairy and the lower numbers continue as I need to put on a bit of weight!

I used to take that but stopped it in case of dementia. Don't know whether it causes it or not but not taking any chances. :( I didn't really need it anyways, I was just eating badly. If I stick to low carb I don't get indigestion. They've upped my Mum's tablets to two a day. I discard one of them. Why take a tablet in case you get indigestion, it's daft I think. She could just take a glug of Gaviscon. 🙄

It depletes vitamin B12 and when you are B12 deficient it can lead to dementia like symptoms and if not treated it could prove irreversible.

Really? :( That's not good is it? A family member is always lowish on the vit B12 but how do you get enough of that? I think you have to have injections from the doc don't you? One thing more to worry about!

It actively depletes B12 or makes it harder to absorb B12? I need to go and read up.

I take it because I’m on naproxen which is a slow release NSAID and so more likely to cause ulcers etc in long term use so for me it’s preventative rather than to treat indigestion. I recently had health issues and one of the things they checked was B12 but my levels were very healthy.

I know it interferes with gabapentin (one of my other meds) so I have to take it 2 hours after.

Bear in mind that if you have absorption problems then injections are the only alternative.

Nice to see you posting again @Leonora 🙂
