Omnipod 5 Thigh Pod Position & Libre +2 Sensor

Hi

I've been on the O5 now since Nov 2024 and I'm a type 1 of almost 50 years now.

I've mainly placed the O5 pod on the back of my arms and right next to the Libre +2 sensor, which normally works well.

I've placed the pod on my thigh on only one occasion, which didn't go well. I have again today started a new pod and decided to opt for the thigh position to give it a 2nd chance and to make sure I'm not getting a build up on the back of my arms. I need to give them a rest.

The main issue I have with the pod moving to the thigh is that it drops the signal with the Libre +2 sensor. Again, tonight, it's not had a signal for 2 hours. When I tried this on the thigh previously, it dropped the signal for almost 3 hours.

Has anyone else experienced this and found a solution please?

Many thanks

Never really use thighs as don't get great absorption there, is there a reason you don't use your abdomen area & even buttock area?

If at all possible ask if you can switch to Dexcom sensors, I use DexG6 with my O5 & don't have any issues with connectivity between both devices even when worn apart, unlike Libre where many members here have said they have issues with connectivity.

Hi. Thanks for your response. I used to use the thigh area a lot when I was on the former penfill system, which worked ok. I fancied it for the Omnipod as it can be a pain sleeping with the pod on the back of the arms sometimes.

I have asked about the Dexcom but my practice are saying it's a no no currently, which is a shame.

I have used placed the pod on my abdomen but found it a tad sore and 'in the way'. I need to give it another go perhaps.

All the best.

I had such an issue with the O5 and libre 2 plus, would only work fully if both within 2 inches of each other. I struggled with site rotation as the libre 2+ could only be on the arm, made having the patch pump pointless to me.
Moved over to Dexicom 6 and that works as far apart from each other and I can wear then including sensor on my stomach, pod on my back or bottom. I had no issues with the libre any version until O5 HCL.

Once set up on the PMD you can still get the libre working on the phone too. Even if it won’t connect well with the pod or PDM you can still monitor levels and operate in manual mode. Defeats the point of the O5 but better than finger testing.

I use Omnipod and Freestyle 2+

The only reliable position I've found is keeping both on the same upper arm, inconvenient but have to live with it. I rarely have an omnipod lasting the 3 full days, generally 2 maybe 2.5.

(I'm due to change arms later today, I always look forward to it)

I found it worked OK if I placed the pod on the side of my midriff and the sensor on my arm. However I found the system quite clonky and rather useless. After 6 months, which I thought was a good trial, I switched the PDM to manual and installed the sensor on my phone.

I had the same problem, and my favourite spot is my thigh. In fact, I couldn’t put the pod anywhere other than my arm. Sadly my arms weren’t keen on 5 pod changes per sensor (they were raw, hot and bruised (I’m a sensitive soul skin wise). The pod on my thigh, worked but only when sat down as soon as I stood up it lost connection. I changed to Dexcom G6 about three weeks ago and I have that on my arm and the pod on my thigh and it works like a dream. Also works on my abdomen, upper and lower, lower back etc. I’m quite angry about it all to be honest. I spent the first three weeks of my pumping life in a right mess, having been told to switch my sensor out several times so running it on manual (ran out of sensors) having never used a pump. It’s possible it’s height related, I’m Amazonian in stature, but they flatly refused to tell me how close they had to be.

With the G6 the only issue I’ve had is with the pod on my lower abdomen and sensor on my arm (intermittent connection but 5 mins max). A completely different experience, in fact it’s a joy. I also found out that as a T1 you can choose which sensor (NICE guidelines) you have so you should be able to switch. Only downside is I react to the adhesive on the dexcom sensor, but I’d rather that than spend half my life on the phone to customer support. Hope you get it sorted.

Thanks all for your feedback and advice. Seems to me I need to go Dexcom route. I have emailed the diabetic nurse today so fingers crossed.

I've seen YT videos today that appear to suggest you can in fact place a Libre 2 and pod on the thigh and which appear to work. I'll need to try that next I think. It's been a tough day, far too less connectivity for my liking.

All the best.

I couldn’t live with it as my arms are such a limited surface area and playing a contact sport it was impossible for me. I am glad it works like this for you. Are you not worried about using the same sites so often?

Mine was over 2 months and I really felt like it was worse than Omnipod Dash.
It is not height as I am only 5foot3 so can't be that.
I was told by insulet that it was Libre's fault, interaction with other Bluetooth nearby, must be 2 inches close to each other (opposite of all their guidance, its all line of sight, and Libre told me it was Insulet's issue, however offered replacements unlike insulet. Freestyle where much more helpful, and refereed back to the information, Insulet said the info was wrong, and that if I applied wrong (but following their reps and printed/online info) I couldn't get a replacement. Urgh.

Is it worth trying under patches for the G6?

Yes, its a worry

I top and tail plus fit above and below the sensor. I reckon the canula doesn't go in the same place twice, around 6-7 pods before a complete change of sensor/arm/pods.

When I first fit a pod or sensor I use an elasticated armband elbow support, helps hold everything firmly while the glue sets. I also use the armband for protection if likely to be bashing and dislodging them, (I do some forestry work) one band covers both devices.
