Steff, I was on both Metformin and Gliclazide for a long time and gradually had my dosage increased until it was at the maximum allowed dose. This worked fine until just over a year ago when my BG levels were gradually getting higher and higher and it was decided to put me on insulin.

You will need to make sure that you don't go for too long a period without eating as you are likely to experiance a hypo if you do. Apart from that I suffered no side affects while on Metformin and Gliclazide.
