I've been on oral steroids for the last 6 weeks and been told by my doctor that it has made me Type 2 diabetic!!! Initially my BS was 29!!!! Now it hovers at an average of 11. (I went low Carb straight away.) My HBA1C was 55 and I've been give 40mg Gliclazide to take twice a day. Can someone tell me if this will be a temporary phenomenon. I'm really worried. Many thanks. BTW I'm off out in a minute so I'll pick up your responses in a couple of hours.

Welcome to the forum, Leonora. You’ll find everyone on here friendly and helpful.

It may well be that you have been rescued by your steroid course, which may have revealed hidden diabetes. It’s unusual for a steroid course to produce temporary diabetes.

It’s also unusual, I have to say, to be started on Gliclazide as a Type 2 rather than Metformin, unless you were given steroids for a gastrointestinal condition. You’ll have to be aware that your BG may drop to low levels, when you may feel a bit sweaty and shaky. So always have available some quick acting sweet stuff like fruit juice or Lucozade. Or my favourite, Jelly Babies.

Well done for going low carb - I’m sure other T2s will be along to give you some proper advice on diets🙂

Thank you Mike and sorry for the late response - family emergency!!! I'll do what you suggest and always keep a sweet drink with me. TBH I have had moments when I feel a little shaky. I'm so glad I came here. About low carb...I finally realised what was pushing my sugar up. It's a favorite full fat Greek yogurt I eat every morning. It's only 6.5 carbs so I didn't think anything of it until I tested before and after. Looks like it'll be bacon and eggs from now on. Again - thanks.

I’ve asked the forum bosses to move this thread to the Newbies forum so that more folk will see it to give you all the help and support that you need🙂
