Hi only recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes am on Empagliflozin 2 weeks ago had funny taste in my mouth that's gone but I've got an odd smell when I breath in through my nose I can't say it's horrible nor can I say that it smells like this or that has anybody else had this please

Hi the taste went but still have the smell it doesn't affect any smells it's just when I breath in I can smell it . I've done urine testing strips Keytones were fine I can't say what it smells like It's not even like anything I can name it's not sweet or metallic or musty just odd

That’s good that it’s not ketones. My other thought is some kind of sinus issue. There are a variety of sinus and throat viruses going round at the moment. Some cause a funny taste or smell. I had a nasty virus and I kept thinking I could smell burning. A colleague had a similar virus and kept tasting and smelling boiled cabbage even though they’d eaten none and none was near.

I haven't had a cold or cough or bad throat never had sinus problems I'm waiting on a call back from drs maybe they will shed some light on it thank you fir responding

Tree pollen is mega high everywhere right now and some days it affects either me or my husband and other days it doesn't affect us at all. Could be something planted in a neighbour's garden or someone's walked or driven past your house with a stinky vape on the go, some paint someone's applied to their fence - or anything, really.

Sinus infections can cause taste and smell issues. I use Stermar Nasal spray most every day to keep things at bay, there is a specific one for colds and sinus issues.

Its not a smell coming from an outside source it's there only when I breath in through my nose it doesn't affect other smells

I haven't had or got sinus infection
Can you smell other smells normally.
Could it be something to do with your teeth or mouth, it might be worth visiting your dentist to eliminate any issues there.
Is it affecting your taste.
I had a virus and it affected both my sense of smell and taste, things smelt and tasted unpleasant. I saw a specialist referred by my dentist and he said it can happen after a virus and it would probably return to normal which it eventually did.

Yes other smells are normal been to dentist all good I haven't had any coughs colds or sinus problems apparently it's meant to be common in people with diabetes I haven't come across anybody else yet it's driving me up the wall

I found this, which is a report of a patient experiencing an odour on this drug that went away when she stopped it:

Sorry you are being plagued by a weird smell @Janzdog

Hope you can get to the bottom of it.

Are you taking Metformin as well? Or only the Empagliflozin? Do you think it might be work asking your Dr about a different ‘flozin (there are several I believe)

Thankyou the smell only happens when I breath in through nose I'm also on Empagliflozin for 3 weeks and this came on after 2 weeks . Just coincidence but my first suoervisors name was Rae Harbottle I've never met another she was from Haltwhistle back in 70s

I'm not called Harbottle in real life! It's the name of the character in old Will Hay comedy films!
