Should I be worried about a 0.5 keytone reading since it's at the higher end of normal.

have you drastically cut carbs and when you got that reading what was you blood glucose like ?

I hadn't eaten anything yet today. Last time I checked it was 8.2. I checked my glucose at around 6.30 this morning.

Could be ’starvation ketones’ following your fast overnight.

But certainly worth keeping an eye on.

I know the information I had said that lower than 0.6 is normal but I thought thats getting the lower stage. I have been recently reduced my back around insulin from 14 to 10

Also just an extra question can anything interfire with a keytone reading like it does with suger levels

All good down to O.1 now

It's most likely starvation ketones like @everydayupsanddowns mentioned, quite common, they should lower when you've taken some insulin and got some food inside you

As far as I'm aware nothing interfere's with a ketone reading xx

If I'm honest Im having a constant fear of keytones at the moment

May I ask why? Have you spoken to your team about this? xx
Maybe because that partlly what made me end up in hospital before I knew I had this

That's how most of us end up being diagnosed as Type 1, I too ended up in the hospital with ketones present although I'd done a full days work that day, dangerous levels of ketones are highly unlikely to be present with in range glucose levels and unless unwell or above 14 I and most wouldn't even check for ketones, I'd suggest speaking to your team around your anxiety about ketones, they may be able to help put your mind at ease xx

The hospital told me to check if them if I had a cold or missed a dose the nurse I spoke to on Tuesday said to check them if sugers are high or I feel unwell in any

Just for reference the advice from the paediatric team is to check ketones if your BG is over 16 (at the time you would usually do a finger prick). Any ketones under 1 are basically fine and will be rectified through usual dosing. Ketones 1-2.9 require one level of correction (10% of body weight) and ketones of 3.0+ double that. So for someone is 70kg who has ketones of 2.3 it would be 7 units by pen (not pump), for ketones of 3.3 it would be 14 units (don’t add a BG correction). (I don’t know if the 10% remains over 100kg, my chart only goes up to 100). Keep checking BG and have sugary drinks if you go below 5 having given a ketone correction. If you are unwell you may get significant ketones with a BG under 16 so it can be worth checking ketones if you’re unwell (covid has had some people showing ketones with a BG of only 10) but generally you would only check ketones if BG is over 16 and even then you might not check if you know why they’re high and just correct as normal. We very rarely have any need to check for ketones. It’s not something you need to be doing on a regular basis. We had an overnight pump problem last week where my 11yo had a BG of 22 when they woke up (no dexcom on that day) and felt sick. They had ketones of 1.5 so we did the appropriate correction for that and it was fine afterwards. They’ve had BG of 22 before without ketones so I suspect it was a combination of no food overnight with the high BG that caused the ketones.

I've not be taught how to do corrections yet

That’s basically what I was told. I tend to only check when I’m over 13/14 blood sugar. I have a cold at the moment but my blood sugar is ok so I haven’t checked my ketones.

Your ketone test is very likely to be starvation ketones, as mentioned above. You can see that the level went down ok. There’s no need to test for ketones unless you have an issue like illness or high blood sugar. Personally, I would get reassurance from your DSN as this is obviously something that’s causing you concern and it shouldn’t be. Testing for ketones is an occasional thing. Sometimes I go for months and months without having to test.

Yeah I was feeling a bit off at the time which is why I did it.

Off in what way? Any nausea makes me check for ketones, but generally if I feel not quite right I test my blood sugar and if that’s in range I don’t test for ketones. It’s hard at first to work out what’s the diabetes and what’s illness, but you’ll get better at it.

Although there is a theoretical risk of getting ketones with normal blood sugar, that’s very uncommon and usually they appear with high blood sugar - ie over 13/14/15 or around there.

I'll now not to check for keytones before backfast next time to avoid panic

Don't trust my advice on this, but after type 1 diagnosis, entered "Atkins" type diet and was in Ketosis for more than a year. However my BG level was 4-5 so not high. I asked my hosp DM team what was the difference between ketosis with BG levels of 5 or 28 and they couldn't give me an answer, so although have been in hosp a couple of times with DKA after flu, not sure was really at risk.
