Ok, I have now swapped my addiction from Easter egg chocolates to walnuts and hazelnuts So now, am not so worried about carbs but now the dietary cholestrol content of the saturated fat due to the copious amounts of nuts I eat... Sigh. One saving grace, I eat ground nuts to spare any cracking of teeth which would necessitate a visit to my lovely dentist

Thought thread tittle said Nuts now & hot chocolate, that sounds good combination.

Yeah get what you mean about breaking teeth, had that happen before. Talking of nuts watching snooker before & 2 nuts disrupted play, one jumped on one table covered himself in orange powder other nut held on to middle pocket on other table before being pulled away.

Oooh I forgot about them. Chocolate covered brazil nuts yum. Happy days.

Chocolate covered nuts are even better with chocolate covered raisins alas!!!

Those white yoghurt covered ones are good too.

But, more seriously, nuts themselves are a treat to me now - they were always 'naughty' because of the fat content previously. Macademia nuts were especially so (oh, how I love them!) 🙂

Chocolate covered raisins. Also yum.
I am teaching myself to limit my nut consumption to 20gm per day. They are so calorific. I weigh the exact amount and put it in a jar for me to have during the day and when they are gone that's it until the next day. Easier said than done!

Chocolate coveted raisins, now your talking.

Not had them for years, don't know there still around but you did once get packet with mixture of choc nuts & raisins.

The inflammatory effect of excess carbs on cholesterol in type 2 is also guaranteed to be worse than the fats in nuts.

Inflammation caused by insulin resistance and T2 raises triglycerides and LDL small dense particles and lowers Hdl. All undesirable. Almost all people switching to low carb find their trigs fall and Hdl improves. If tested (and it isn’t on a standard nhs panel) they also find their LDL pattern changes from potentially problematic small dense particles to larger buoyant and potentially protective particles. There are some that find their ldl numbers rise in which case identifying which type becomes even more relevant. A calculated (note it’s not measured) stand ldl test doesn’t differentiate between the two.

Then you have to ask are the cholesterol results actually predicting something and by how much? And what can you do in reality to change the risk. Is it to reduce saturated fats as widely believed until recently or is it more about carbs and inflammation as increasing evidence is suggesting. Are you willing to accept the side effects of statins (raised bgl, potentially association with things like Alzheimer’s and muscle pain) for a theoretical small statistical lowering of ldl (not cvd outcomes though). Total numbers are next to meaningless in predicting cvd outcomes. Trig/Hdl ratios or ldl particle size are more meaningful. Be wary of relative risk numbers looking scary when absolute risks are actually tiny.

You may think I’m barmy to question the standard position - and that’s your right - but at least educate yourself on both sides of the argument before picking one.

Oh yes they are still for sale . Hey ho...

Often pop in there, also lot cheaper than smaller packets in supermarkets.
They are brilliant for all sorts of stuff. We used to use Julian Graves but they were taken over by H & B and promptly closed. I believe the same people then set up Grape Tree. Unfortunately our nearest is Solihull or Rugby so a bit of a special trip needed. We used to go to the one at Bicester Avenue when visiting relatives but that closed late last year and the Blue Diamond expanded into the space.

I make my own chocolate Brazil's by melting very high cocoa chocolate in the microwave and mix Brazil's until nicely coated leave to harden ( if you can !)
Don't eat too many at once !!!!
Carol

That's a good idea. Might try it with a 100% cacao Ombar. I bought it lead by curiosity and seeing it was pretty low carb. It is in fact 0 carbs for me as I'm not eating it, can't deal with the taste  but I hate to waste food so might try the combination with nuts and very little chocolate. Or maybe melt it together with milk chocolate, so the mix is a sort of dark but not SO dark choc?

I could be wrong but as they are plant based I think the saturated fat in nuts is a “good” saturate ie. Plant based as opposed to “bad” saturates that would be in chocolate etc (but not all blood tests break it down in this way, and the food packets certainly don’t!).

HSSS - thank you for your post. It's all very complicated, trying to understand what 'healthy' means, and then how to achieve it. But I'm starting the learning curve, so posts like yours are helpful in that journey.

PS - keep meaning to ask - what does 'trigs' mean? I read it on this forum lots of times, but haven't worked it out from the context yet. 🙂

You are correct but I eat sooo many and the nurse told me there are trace elements of saturated fats in some nuts...the amount i eat is way over trace element. I tried measuring a few grams out and sticking with that. Hmm, didn't work too well simpky measured more!
