Numb foot/toes after back surgery

Although I am being treated for foot drop following my surgery the orthotist - is that even a proper word! - physio and osteopath cannot give me info on how to get foot care or refer me to the correct service. Presumably this means back to DSN who knows nothing about my other problems in detail. Can I self refer? I live in Kent but can't seem to find specific diabetes podiatry info. As I have no feeling on toe tips or top of foot I am checking feet but cannot physically see all round and between. The suggestion of a mirror on a stick I did not find helpful. Picture me sitting on a seat holding my foot on my other knee as high as I can whilst trying to hold toes apart and trying to get mirror in the relevant position as well as a light source. I have had to fight my corner in the past but need the correct info first. I am just not sure in this respect what my rights are so any advice welcome.

Unfortunately it varies from area to area. I would ring your surgery and ask them what the local procedure is.

I have Neuropathy and PAD . The podiatrists I see are NHS podiatrists. Your surgery, should be able to refer you as should your DSN.
In my area of Kent , Herne Bay Area we can only self refer to the NHS trained staff who cut toenails.
If you have the number of your local NHS podiatry service , they will know what you need do to get a referral.

I used to be a GP in Maidstone, years ago. Lived at the top end of Loose Road. Anyway, have a look in Tunbridge Wells, the different demographic make it more likely that there's a service. You don't need to find a specific Diabetes podiatrist, they're all fully trained in diabetic problems - that's why you can't find any info for that specific service.

I know in some areas you can self refer. Try your GP and the DSN. You may have to spell out all of the details tot he DSN, but as diabetics we should have regular professional foot checks any way.
