My diabetic eye screening test did not show any diabetic changes. So good news on that front.

Now the bad news. My pre lunch BG was a good 6.4. I then had 3 small boiled potatoes, large portion of broccoli, 2 chicken style burgers (grilled) and gravy. Followed by a small bowl of fresh strawberries. Then I finished up 2 sesame snaps (very sweet).
2 hrs later my Post meal BG 17.9 KETONES flashing OMG!!.😱

So took the dogs a walk to try to walk it off and pottered around the garden.

I will take it again in 2 hrs time. I will take that as a warning.

extra activity with ketones aint a good idea, you will just produce more....nothing else you can do though.....:(

was the flashing ketones a warning or a blood test confirming them...........

Excellent news about eyes. Hope the BGs sort themselves out for you very soon

Unless you checked for Ketones, I would assume the flashing "KETONES" is a warning that you should check for ketones. Let us know how you are when you next check. If you are worried phone your DSN or GP for advice

Great news on the eyes vegan, one less thing to worry over x

I have terrible trouble with some fruit especially strawberries once i had approx 5 and my BS shot up to 15 so now i seldom have them.Hope the levels sort out soon

Thanks. The monitor flashed a warning. Feel fine, but was a bit sleepy just after lunch, which is nothing unusual for me.

The ketones will be less of a worry for you veganlass, as a Type 2 on D&E. They are only really a danger when there is a lack of insulin to help process them out of the body, as can happen with a Type 1 or Type 2 who needs insulin. As a result, you were OK to exercise to try and bring levels down.

I wonder what it was in the food that caused such a rise? Perhaps try the meal again, but elimintating one of the elements?

Thanks. I suspect it was the sesame snacks, very sweet. Strawbs I thought would be ok. Perhaps it was the gravy?. Also next time I will only have one burger. A bit scary though..

I have found that by hanging over my armchair I can do run type exercise with my legs which elevates my heart rate nicely without falling over!!. So I will practice that.

They sound like the culprits then! The burgers and gravy shouldn't have an impact if they weren't in bread buns, which I presume not. Also, there is the possibility that your finger that you prickedmay have had something on it that corrupted the reading - forgive the implication if you washed it before testing! 🙂

Great that you have devised an exercise you can do safely - that will really help you! 🙂

I do wash my hands well and rinse.

I think it was the sesame snacks. :(

I am going to have oatcakes for tea, they have low GI.

What were the "chicken-style burgers" made of ?

As it stands you had carbs, carbs, carbs and carbs. Followed by a small bowl of carbs with a side order of carbs.

Try the same again tomoorow without the potatoes and sesame snaps.

Soya and they were 15 grams of carbs each. Half of one I didnt eat.

That's 22 g of carbohydrate.
The great Bernstein tells us that 1 g of carb will raise ave bg of the average overweight Type 2 Diabetic by 0.4 mmol. So on average the 22 will produce a rise of 9 mmol on their own without the potatoes, broccoli, gravy, strawberries and sesame snaps chipping in as well.

How soon the "chicken style" burgers will peak depends on their GI of course.

Have you considered the Glycemic Load ( as opposed to GI ) diets yet ?

You have to bear in mind as a Vegan that there are three nutrition groups - protein, fats and carbohydrate and anything that is not protein or fat is carbohydrate ( i.e. most/all food from plant sources).

Be careful doing that - can we see a picture? Just kidding. It is good though that you have found a way with your disability to find a way of exercising.

Good news on the eyes - and it does sound like you need to reduce your carbs. Have you worked out your total for the meal?

Ive just looked again at the box. each burger is 11.2 grams carbs and 0.08 sugar. No Cholesterol.

so that 22.4 grams. A healthy carb level for women a day is 230 grams which I have less of that.

I dont know what carbs fresh strawberries are. Potatoes were small.

Shouldnt think broccoli counts much?. I try to have a cooked meal at lunchtime so I can try to work it off in the afternoon.

My pre tea BG was 10.9 . Just ate 5 oatcakes with about 1 tablespoon of spreadable (vegan) cheezily 6.7 grams in 100 gram. Plus one tomato and followed by 6 fresh strawberries.

Took my BG again 2 hrs after tea and its 10.3 !!1 less than the pre one.. weird.

This reminds me of the 31st March, when my fasting result was 6.something -- then I had sweet-and-sour chicken balls with fried rice for lunch, and when I saw my GP's DSN about 3 hours later I had shot up to over 24! 😱 She made me produce a urine sample so she could test for ketones -- fortunately that test was negative, or I would have been packed straight off to A&E. :(

I've dropped that particular takeaway from my list (pity, it was a favourite)...

I have to say that, although I am aware of the recommended daily amount of carbs I tend to think of it as an absolute maximum, and as a person with diabetes would tend to be wary of approaching it too closely. I don't purposely restrict my carb intake, but when I have had occasion to record my food intake I find that I am more around 180g, sometimes much less. Also, I can inject insulin to match the carb intake, so I'm not reliant on my body's own capacity to cope with anything I eat.

The GL approach is probably the best approach, combined with testing to determine what level of carbs and of what combination/type you can cope with.

As for broccoli, I wouldn't 'count' that when calculating an injection dose, nor do I for things like carrots, green beans, pulses etc. as they are so low in carbs per portion or so slow-release that it has little impact on my levels.

I had it done last week. All clear no sign of retinopathy. Test to be done yearly.🙂
