Hi,

Been noticing lately that my novorapid readings after food have been weird

Example reading was 5.5, carb counted my food, took correct dosage (in stomach), 3 hours later it’s 13.5 (using Libre)

it seems to be when I inject into my stomach it doesn’t seem to work as well as when I do it in my arm, I can’t feel any fatty lumps. Currently on 4mm needles, have put on weight since diagnosis (hard not to when you’ve fallen to 8 stone) current weight is 15 stone ish. Could I need longer needles? Vary my injection spots more?

Any advice or anyone experienced the same thing?

Luke

My understanding is that the fatty layer that the insulin needs to go in starts at the same level under the skin whatever our weight . I believe the NICE guidelines recommend 4mm needles .

Is it the whole of your stomach that’s involved or just certain areas.

Are you confirming with finger prick? What are they like 4-5 hours after injecting? As mentioned do you pre bolus? Has your ratio possibly changed? Have you basal tested? Increase in weight can make you more insulin resistant too therefore requiring more so there are a number of reasons it could be xx

I use my whole stomach

I’ve changed my ratios and like I stated when I inject into my arm it seems to work ok. So I don’t think the ratio is out.

I don’t finger prick anymore, I can’t see the readings being that massively different from why I’m seeing. Maybe 1 or 2 out.

You should still be finger pricking to conform low and high readings as the Libre loses accuracy at lower and higher levels so they need checked against a finger prick, even Abbott themselves recommend that

I had an issue very similar to this and my consultant could see within a few seconds when my bg was hitting 18-24mmol that the issue was due to an absorbtion problem.

As well as pre housing, just check your site as there may a lipotrophy. Which sounds more like an award than a pain in the nether regions but hopefully you'll feel better soon.

Hear hear to the lipotrophy - my tummy's hopeless at absorbing now. Just have to stop using it for at least a few months and then have another go. It's simply damage, from constantly having needles stuck in it. It gets fed up and tells me to take a running jump! LOL

Auto correction on my tablet means it's sending its own messages!

I came off the pump due to DKA from a lipo on my right side (abdo) I asked my consultant how you get rid of the lipo and he said they are reabsorbed back into the tissues! Lipos are bothersome and a nuisance for causing insulin resistance. I was told by someone with diabetes that they successfully massaged lipos out of himself but how he did it is a mystery!

I wish massage worked! It would be comparatively easy to get rid of the ruddy things then - but I can assure anyone that's interested that it's no help whatever with them. It is lovely otherwise though!

Hi. That's quite a high level of weight gain? Are you keeping your carb intake down to a sensible level? If you gain too much weight you may become insulin resistant which is not good.

Its a large gain, but it was always going to look dramatic after losing 5 stone when diagnosed

Hope your NR has become a bit more predictable recently Luke. There are enough variables and challenges with T1 without constantly having to second guess what effect each dose will deliver!

what have you been eating to gain 7 stone? have you had to feed many hypo's as I wouldn't say it was normal to gain that amount of weight to be honest, anyways same as Mike hope things have resolved for you xx
