Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi all. I have been on this stevedore and found it really useful however due to the challenges of daily life it's been 5 years since I have been on.
I am now nearly 30 and still having the same struggles I was having when I was first diagnosed 14 years ago. I want to change and really want to be getting better control of my diabetes. I have a pump that I have had for 3 years and since having this I have not been admitted to hospital with anything diabetes related. But I still have a hba1c that is far to high (in old money around 14). I have just had laser eye surgery as I had sight threatening retinopathy. I'm reaching a point where I don't k of what to do anymore. I start doing my testing and it goes well and I'm eating properly and then I'll get a couple of high readings and then I'm like it doesn't matter what I do it's high so give up. Hopefully with the help of the group I can re find why bother with it all.

Thanks for reading

Stuart

Hi Stuart, welcome back 🙂 Sorry to hear you are still having problems :( It's hard sometimes when you get disheartened by high readings and you feel you are doing all you can, but hopefully we can help keep you motivated and help you get things under better control 🙂

Are there any particular times of day when you feel it is hard to get good levels? How does your waking level compare to your bedtime level? Have you considered trying a Freestyle Libre so you can get a better idea of how your levels behave through the day and night?

Hi I'm awful at testing to be honest. Because I'm on the accu check spirit combo that connects to my computer I can see what daily trends are. It's just so hard I don't think I have ever come to terms with actually being diabetic. I've spent my entire life being told what I can and can't eat. I'm just sick of it all and got in tow tut that I can't seem to find the way out of

Have you considered talking to a specialist Psychologist? I believe some have found it helpful?

Hi Stu

Welcome back to the forum. I am on the same pump as you. When I find that things are going weird, the first thing that I check is to make sure that the basal rates are correct for me throughout the day. Only then do I start to sort the carb and sensitivity ratios.

Even when I think I have everything sorted there are still days when things appear to go wrong, and depending on how in feel I will correct and then get on with it, try to work out why (and sometimes I can find no logic because there isn't ). Try not to get put off by the odd high reading.

How about starting by focusing on just morning readings. Often if the day starts on track it has more chance of continuing that way. Have you talked to your DSN/Consultant? If you explain to them that you are wanting to get back on track, they are likely to be keen to help.

My biggest realisation after joining this forum, was that by simply eating less carbs (I haven't gone low carb) I could get post meal spikes lower, and then adding in a walk after each meal helps too.

Start with Small steps.

Hi Stuart welcome I myself find it hard to control and everytime I get any high or low reading I panic can rarely get it stable as it's to up and down but I keep trying the best I can

Don't think of it like that, think of it as an opportunity to really look after yourself now. It took me a year to get my head around it, but got there in the end. It'll be okay, be aware, get measuring your bloods religiously, find out what foods you can eat with impunity and go from there. 🙂
