Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all, I have strong family history type 2 (last few generations all affected), I have had a few random high sugars above 11 in the past few months, fasting around 5.5. I do have a high sugar intake, which I know I need to cut back but I noticed my sugars go higher especially in the evenings I am regularly over 8 - which is when I am on the toilet constantly (as often as every 20 mins), really thirsty and my vision gets blurry. I understand that under current diagnosis guidelines I am not diabetic, I.E fasting ok and my sugars generaly fine at 2 hour post meal mark. Is it normal to keep going high most days or is this a sign of things to come ? I do not have a good relationship with GP and don't want to look stupid. Do people without Diabetes go over 7 frequently ?
Thankyou all for any advice you can give, sorry for long post, pip

might not be be the advice you want but I think a visit to the GP is probably a good idea. You have some symptoms of diabetes and have had above normal blood sugars. What they will probably want to do is a fasting blood test and a glucose tolerence test and maybe a HbA1c blood test (which shows average blood sugars over 2-3 months)

People without diabetes do have higher numbers which come back down quickly- how high can be a controvertial issue.

You are at risk of diabetes because of your family history, there are things you can do to reduce the risk, eating well, exercising, losing weight (if you need to).

hope that you don't have diabetes, but if you find out that you do then you ahve foudn a great place

Hello Pip

Given your family history, the symptoms you have and your own results I think you should go and have a chat with your GP. You have a good relationship and so should be able to take your concerns to him. The tests Sofaraway talks about would be useful and helpful in reaching a clearer diagnosis.

World Health Organisation indicates that "person with symptoms of diabetes and a venous plasma glucose taken at randon equal to or more than 11.1mmol has diabetes" - (nb that is not quite the same measure as in the fingerprick test which uses capilliary blood)

Diabetes UK guidelines for Type 2 say HbA1c (see tab top of site) should be <6.5mmol/l with fingerprick blood test results of 4-7mmol/sl pre-meals and <8.5mmols/l post meals

If you are diabetic then the sooner you know the more choices you have so you can lessen your risks of long term complications. If you are not diabetic, you may be at risk and getting some advice on diet and exercise may help you avoid developing the condition or, at least, delay its arrival

Good luck

Dear Pip,

The advice given by sofaraway and Vanessa is spot on, the only thing I would add is that you should do as you have suggested and cut back on your sugars. BTW sugar is a carbohydrate and so your suggestion to cut back on on sugars should really be cut back on carbohydrates. In order to do this you should seek the advice of a professional - your GP? I follow a controlled carbohydrate approach and my maxim is "If you don't put carbohydrates into your body, how can you have high blood sugars"

Regards Dodger

With a family history of diabetes go to your GP and get it checked out. Once you have got this sorted and ome kind of control you'll visit the loo less frequently and unless you need glasees, your vision will improve too.
