I'm 25 and was previously diagnosed with gestational diabetes which was diet controlled. My baby is now 6 months old. I had a follow up glucose tolerance test which revealed that I still have 'impaired glucose tolerance' so it looks like I was likely prediabetic before pregnancy. My fasting levels are perfect but I can spike high after meals (absolute highest I've seen is 10 and my 2 hour GTT reading was 9).f I've cut my carbs considerably (averaging about 100 - 150 a day tops) but am very thin so can't go any lower than that. Sometimes I seem to be able to get away with more carbs. However the other night as a test I had some cottage pie which sent me to 9 and I hovered around there for 3-4 hours which i know isnt good (potato seems to be the worst culprit for me). Generally though I have about 30g at each meal and reach a peak of up to 7.8. I often find my BG hovers between 6.8 - 7.8 for half an hour or 45 minutes and is generally under 6 at 2 hours.
So my question is, is it OK to spike to 7.8ish after meals every day? As I think I'd find it hard to manage on less carbs given my weight etc. And is it OK for it to stay around this level for 30ish minutes?
Do non-diabetics spike to 7.8 often? And finally, have any of you tested non-diabetics - if so what kind of readings did they get? This is to satisfy my own curiosity more than anything!
