Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
hi all

Got blood tests for (what what I think is) an unrelated ailment and had telephone appointment with doctor today to confirm blood test results- the doctor ran through the list (all other tests fine) and then said I had diabetes and he would arrange a follow up test in a few months

He didn’t say what sort but having read up after work I am assuming that it’s type 2 - feel totally cast adrift and feeling scared and upset

I am over weight but I am exercising 2/3 times a week - food has been a battle of the last 10 years or so as I comfort eat

My head is all over the place - my son saw we researching and is asking questions

The doc said I was at 51 and should be below 48

Just after some reassuring words if anyone can offer them - i had no idea diabetes was so serious - I had a routine check a while ago and was told I was at risk but for some unknown reason I threw the letter in my bag and forgot about - I have no idea how I could be soooo stupid

Hello @Lbobs , welcome to the forum and to the club that no one wants to join. First off I wish to reassure you that with the right info , which you will get plenty of on here and some work by yourself, diabetes is a condition that can be managed well ! Many of us on here have lived well with diabetes for decades.

It’s uncontrolled Diabetes that causes most of the problems you have heard about .

An Hb1ac of 51 means you have just crossed the threshold of 48 into diabetes , I was much much higher when diagnosed back in the 90s.

How did you come to be dx (diagnosed)

Imo To leave you floundering for a couple of months is not good at all . Arrange an an oppointment with Gp , perhaps a telephone app to ask if they have a diabetes nurse, if so ask to be referred to the nurse.

Thank you for your response - I have been having some changes in bowel habits/ bloating (sorry if too much info!!) which I thought was possibly ibs and doctor sent me for blood test - so was expecting something like that but not diabetes -
I will call Monday for a follow up appointment with gp - just started reading up and everywhere says how it’s such a serious condition and how it reduces life span - I just panicked - feeling bit better now I have found this site but really feel like I have done this to myself as I disregarded previous warning (which came after age 40 health check )

Hi Lbobs
Welcome to the forum. I was terrified when I was diagnosed but have made lots of progress in a relatively short space of time. It’s not a race but it does give you hope you can manage diabetes. Everyone here is so helpful and I have learned so much. Don’t worry about asking questions there is so much knowledge from the forum members, someone will understand or can offer advice.
I blamed myself for my diagnosis but genetics play a role too and we have no control over them!
Good luck and I hope you feel less scared soon 🙂

Hey I was diagnosed yesterday and feel pretty much the same but I have had an appt made for me to see the diabetes nurse at my GPs so hoping this will answer some questions. At the mo it feels very scary. Keep talking to us and hopefully we can help each other x

Hi - omg terrifying - but another kind poster has already explained that the scary stuff happens when it’s uncontrolled - so feeling a bit better and lovely to talk to fellow newby!

And to be honest I have struggled emotional eating for years and this is going to be a massive kick up the backside for losing weight ( I do exercise but medically overweight )

How did you find out you had t2 ? X

Hi Lbobs . Be careful where you research online as their is a dreadful amount of misinformation even conmen out their.
I think we are going to supprise you on what we eat, cos it sure isn’t just chicken and salad

Feel free to ask questions about diabetes , we’ll do our best to help.

Hi Lbobs. Welcome to the forum. Diagnosis comes as a bit of a shock to say the least, but the early days are always the hardest. I’ve found a couple of pages that you may find useful. It sounds as if you are already doing some of the right things, which is a good start. Yes, diabetes can be serious, but it can also be controlled with a bit of PMA (positive mental attitude). There is loads of experience on here, so feel free to take advantage, no question is too silly.

When your son asks questions, I think you should be open and honest with him. Hiding the truth benefits no-one.

Take care.

Thank you so much - I will have a good read and yes I think you are right about my son - i will explain to him when I understand it myself ! - feeling a lot better than I did a few hours ago ...

Excellent! It comes as a big shock at first, but what seems a struggle now will soon settle down into a routine, and it will just become part of your daily life to the point that you don’t really notice.

Hi, I understand why it feels scary but listen to these guys, they know what they are talking about through lived experience, not text book theory. The changes you need to make sound drastic at first, I know I spent about a week convinced I was going to starve to death as there was nothing worth eating......and I do like my food......then I read, I listened and I learned......now I love my food even more without all those nasty carbs 😛

Thanks - I am learning so much but slightly information overload now! It’s amazing how many carbs there are in different foods - I will cut out obvious carbs until I get my test kit - to give the weight loss a bit of a kick start (hopefully)

I have assumed type 2 as doctor didn’t specify - reading up more was I right to assume ?
