Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi

I was diagnosed 3 months ago with type 2 diabetes and am trying to manage it with diet along with losing weight, controlling my high blood pressure along with high cholesterol (both of which are controlled with medication).

I am looking forward to getting hints and tips regarding food intake so I can manage my condition.

Evening @Fruitella56 welcome to the forums. What sort of foods are you eating at the moment? I was a terrible bread/potato/crisp/kitkat fiend before I was diagnosed, I've cut them out and am trying to eat a low carbohydrate diet so I can lose weight and keep my blood sugar level down. I also have high blood pressure and am on ramipril for that. And high cholesterol, but I'm trying to get that down with diet, rather than medication.
How are you coping with your diagnosis, diet etc? Is there anything specific you'd like to find out about?
There's lots of stuff about diet here if you want to have a look there.
Any other questions, ask away, Sarah

Thanks Sarah for your lovely message, I have the occasional potato, rice but bread is my downfall, I have kept to wholemeal but crave the odd crusty white roll. For me it's about making the food I can eat tasty and try and fit in with what I cook for my husband.

I'll have a look at the link you sent.

Many thanks for getting in touch

Sheila

That's ok Sheila, I bought myself a couple of second hand diabetes recipe books from Amazon, as I had no idea what I should be eating. I've gone "cold turkey" on bread, pasta and potatoes as I have no self control with them!
I like the 8 week blood sugar diet recipe book as it's full of attractive photos of the food, and you don't have to stick to the portion sizes if you're not wanting to follow a low calorie diet. It's Mediterranean style food, so don't know if it's your husband or your sort of food? Lots of other books too, of course.
I've been having omelette for breakfast - it's filling and low in carbs. I usually have mushroom and strong cheddar omelette and it's delicious. And homemade soup for lunch (Stilton and broccoli in particular). Also made swaps for rice by making cauliflower rice in the food processor and swapping mashed potato for mashed cauliflower. So if you were making curry, you can have cauli rice, maybe mixed with normal rice and your husband could have rice and a naan, that way, you're not cooking two meals.
I'm sure people will be able to give you lots of advice if you have any questions,
Best wishes, Sarah

If you look at the thread what did you eat yesterday in the food and recipes forum you will see there is probably no reason why you and your husband cannot have the same tasty meals.
My O H really got on board with a low carb dietary regime ( I have approx 70g carb per day) and also lost weight which he wanted to do, he does have a few extras but we just now regard this as for life.
Some good ideas from @Windy above.
