Type 2
Hi, I was diagnosed with type 2 yesterday 😳 and started meds today 😱. all a bit overwhelming really. It appears that having covid in january has had something to do with my sugars spiking quite high. my white blood cells are very low and there's some other stuff 'not working properly' because of my inability to fight infection at the moment. Dr isn't even sure if the meds will help reduce my sugar levels because the white cells need to play their part. Is there anyone on here had type 2 triggered or accelerated by covid? I'm hoping i can reverse this (not even sure if that's possible?) I don't think i will need to make too many changes to my diet, my exercise is controlled by long covid at the moment but i manage to walk on the days i'm not working. Fatigue is an major issue for me but i have blood tests in 3 weeks time and i'm determined to meet this head on by informing myself as much as i can 🙂

Welcome @zelda 🙂 Others here have mentioned Covid affecting them too. Sorry to hear it’s caused a diabetes diagnosis for you.

What was your HbA1C number? What medication are you on?

Hi @Inka , thanks for the reply. completely new to all of this so not sure, all they said was that my glucose was 26? i have been put on 1 x 500 metformin for 7 days then 2 x 500 until i return for white blood cell count in 3 weeks time 🙄

Hello and welcome! Sorry to hear about your diagnosis post-covid. Having CFS can't be helping either.

You mentioned in your post that other bits of you aren't working very well - can you tell us a bit more? I'm asking because sometimes infection can act as a catalyst for Type 1. Do you need to lose weight or have you been losing weight unintentionally?

Ah, that doesn’t sound like an HbA1C test but more like a one-off glucose test. That doesn’t matter because the diabetes has been discovered and you’ve got some meds to start you off. We’re you given any dietary advice?

Hi @EllsBells liver and kidney functions are below par, still dealing with fatigue, breathlessness, confusion, low blood oxygen (93/94) and very low count on white blood cells. I've lost 8lbs in the last few weeks without trying, however I haven't really got my appetite back so i put it down to that. I am overweight but remain active. having to slowly regain walking strength, only managing 4 miles because of lung capacity. I was thirsty and knew that was an indicator so called the Dr to discuss and they responded immediately

ye i think they have been really helpful, my nurse suggested this site and she said she will take any calls if i need to chat. also my sister in law is type 2 so i can get help from her as she's doing really well diet wise

Welcome to the forum @zelda

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis, but glad that you have found the forum.
It is good to hear that your have a supportive nurse at your Practice and that other family members can support you.

Illness can make glucose levels rise, so having had Covid would have impacted yours and put your pancreas under pressure to produce more insulin. I hope that the Metformin helps to settle things, but pleased that they have booked another test for you.

It will help you to monitor things if you are able to get the actual figures for the tests that they do, as you did with your BG at diagnosis. Do you have access to your results online. This is quite common in various Practices now. These figures will also help us give more appropriate advice.

Do come back with any questions that arise. Nothing is considered silly on here, just ask.

Thanks, yesterday was a bit of a whirlwind. My first test was a glucose of 26 and yesterday the nurse did mention Hba1c and lots more. If i'm honest it was like being in an episode of line of duty with all the abbreviations 😳 I have been encouraged to register with my diabetes my way, where i believe i will be able to view results etc. There's a lot to take in but i will gather my thoughts today, sort out my cupboards and fridge and start my new journey. Once I have info on my results, i'm sure i will be back in touch 🙂

Goodness you have been through the mill @zelda :(

Sorry to hear that your brush with covid has left you with such long-term challenges. I hope you find a way to work through the difficulties, and reduce the symptoms you are experiencing.

Diabetes is a serious condition, but it’s also one that can usually be managed well with a few changes and adaptations - it’s something that you can learn to live well with, and it shouldn’t stop you doing things you enjoy. I’m not sure if enough is known about diabetes connected to Covid to say whether that might be reversible or not, but in general diabetes is a condition that people can manage well long-term with the right knowledge and support and an approach tailored to them as an individual.

And the forum will help you try to find that approach for you
🙂

Thanks, I'm grateful for so many reasons after having covid but didn't see this coming. There's not much at all regarding the links between covid and diabetes, however, there is evidence to show there has been a significant number of people who have developed diabetes after having covid. Some Dr's are saying it may be an acceleration in those who were perhaps predisposed to develop it later?

I'm only on day 5 and still feel a bit overwhelmed with 'labels'. I had armed myself with flavoured waters only to read and article about sweeteners :( I was never a fan of them before but am i right in saying sucralose is not a 'friend' and that I should avoid anything ending in 'ose'?

On the up side this site has some great recipes and I plan to utilise them as much as i can having tried a couple already. I've registered to be able to see my results and hope soon to be able to understand the lingo a bit more. I just need my white cells to play ball and for me to understand and manage type 2 better.

The amount of sucralose in the flavoured waters is very small and only will give a carb content of less than 0.5g per 100ml so should not be a problem. It is the sweeteners ending in OL with can have more of a problem for some people. Erythritol being one to be careful of.

thanks for that, i appreciate the info. think i need to start writing things down, there's so much to remember
