Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone, glad that I’ve found this forum.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 last week after a few weeks of symptoms.

Felt pretty worried/overwhelmed about the whole situation. I became a dad last year so need to be okay for my daughter, and although I was a bit heavy, I didn’t think I’d develop diabetes in my 30’s!

Diabetic nurse wasn’t too reassuring on our phone consultation, she said she’s never seen anybody put their type 2 in remission with readings as high as mine (114 mol/mol or 12.6%) Then proceeded to tell me I should be on 4 tablets a day instead of starting on 1 as per the Doctors prescription.

Hopefully I can get some inspiration and confidence that I can get off the meds eventually by talking to you guys, and hearing about your experiences!

Welcome @PC4965 🙂 A diabetes diagnosis is always a shock. It will get easier.

You say you’re only a bit heavy - has Type 1 been ruled out?

Hi Inka,

Type 1 hasn’t mentioned by the GP. I made an appointment as I had been very thirsty for a few weeks, and had dropped a fair bit of weight without making too much effort over a few months. (although I had been trying to lose weight and was walking every day for an hour with the dog) it just seemed a bit too easy (down from 17st 10 to 15st 4 in about 3 months)

I googled the symptoms, thought I might be diabetic and called for a blood test. The only result I’ve had is from the bloods, I have done a urine test but no result from that yet. The Doc has said he wants a MRI scan of my stomach but I’m waiting for the appointment.

Unexpected weight loss is a sign of Type 1. I’m not saying you have Type 1, but whenever someone expresses surprise at their diagnosis, has a high HbA1C or has lost weight, then I always think of Type 1. Far too many adults are just assumed to be Type 2, but Type 1 is not just a childhood condition - it can develop at any age.

There are tests that can help confirm your type if there’s any doubt.

Please do yourself a cheap and speedy favour - nip to nearest large pharmacy tomorrow and treat yourself to a pot of 'Ketostix' (about £5), read the instructions then test your own pee for ketones asap. If they are greater than 'a low level' then this can indicate the likelihood of the diabetes being Type 1 rather than T2. Do you feel at all nauseous; have you had any weird fluttering sensations in your chest ie heart palpitations, or the feeling you are so blooming tired they could probably peg you out by the ears onto the washing line and you could still sleep?

Hi trophywench,

None of those symptoms at all, I feel pretty good actually. My clothes fit better. I have energy, if I hadn’t been diagnosed I’d be on top of the world right now with how I look and feel!

The only symptoms I had were the extreme thirst and the easier than normal weight loss.

The nurse wants me to have another blood test next week (it will be nearly 3 weeks after my initial test by that point) as apparently they like to start off with two readings. I’ll be interested to see what the score is this time, as when I was initially tested I had symptoms and now I don’t!

Thanks for the advice re the Ketostix - I’ll have a look for that tomorrow!
