Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all, newly diagnosed type2, yesterday in fact!. I am taking metformin and insulin injections in the morning. I’m 26 so was a very real shock to me. Reading through the literature and not really understanding what I can and can’t eat, like, am I allowed a baked potato??? - will be using this forum going forward! I have an immediate question about how often to take blood readings - how often should I? Being newly diagnosed my blood readings are around 19.7 at the moment but that means nothing to me at the moment!
- I have an appointment tomorrow with a diabetic nurse so hopefully all my questions will be answered but any tips would be welcome 🙂

Welcome to the forum @roconnor1994 . I am glad that you have found us.

A diagnosis of Diabetes at any age is a shock, but this is a manageable condition. Good to hear that you have an appointment tomorrow, and we’ll worth a read around this forum and The Learning Zone (here https://learningzone.diabetes.org.uk/?_ga=2.160277688.448409977.1614900281-58673135.1397653160)
and then arming yourself with questions that you have.

With regard testing, the purpose of it is to find out how your body copes with the glucose that will come from any carbohydrates that you eat. Many on here will test before a meal, and then again 2 hours after they have eaten. This alongside a food diary will help you and your team decide on what changes to diet/ portions sizes/ activity levels will help you to get to grips with this. Do talk to your team about this tomorrow and let us know how you get on.

Any questions that you have , just fire away on here. Nothing is considered silly. Just ask.

Hi there and welcome to the forum 🙂

What led to your diagnosis? Any symptoms? What led them to the conclusion you were Type 2?

What insulin have they put you on?

Testing - As you are on insulin you should test when you get up, before you go to bed, before and after meals and if you drive before you set foot in your vehicle, also if you feel "off" as you could be having a hypo
xx

Symptoms were , always being thirsty and peeing a lot especially at night, my opticians recommended I get a blood test as my vision was going blurry. I was at the hospital yesterday where they did all the tests and told me type 2. The insulin is called abasaglar and I’m doing 18 units every morning. I’m also on something called semaglutide (Ozempic 0.25mg) which I need to inject once a week. Again I find it all very confusing at the moment

The test results generally take a little longer if they have performed a C-Peptide or GAD test to rule out Type 1, I only got informed it was definitely Type 1 a few weeks after I was discharged from hospital, have you lost any weight recently without trying? I'd definitely ask them if either of those 2 tests were included

I have no experience with either of those being a Type 1 on a basal/bolus regime but there will be people here that are familiar xx

Not sure if those tests were done but worth an ask Thankyou! And no haven’t been losing weight, although I will try to now!

It is worth an ask because a proper diagnosis is important to get what you are entitled to, although not right Type 1's benefit more than Type 2's even if a Type 2 is on insulin, from the last part of your reply, are you overweight? I don't mean to sound rude by asking that! Are there any specific questions you have? xx

I’m currently 16.5 stone so I have a lot of weight to shift really! But I am ready to get serious about it and hoping that diet and exercise will reverse this

Hi roconnor1994,

Just popping in to say hi. "Am I allowed a baked potato?!" should be the slogan for newly diagnosed diabetics as I'm sure we've all had that panicked thought lol.

You've got some great advice above so take some time to have a read though some threads on the site, get into a testing routine and monitor the impact that the foods you eat have on you. Let us know if there's anything we can assist with as we're here to help.
