Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello to all from the southeastern USA. I was diagnosed with type 2 in May of this year. A1C was 7.4. Fasting blood glucose was around 145. I am as of yet, not insulin dependent, and I am on metformin 750 extended release. After some initial issues with side effects, seem to be tolerating it well now. I have lost 20 pounds of excess weight since diagnose after cutting way down on carbs, and seem to have more energy. I am optimistic that my next checkup in September will show good results.

Hi TM1953USA, welcome to the forum. you are doing really well so far and seem to have a great attitude as well. Keep up the good work. If there is anything you want to know, please ask. This forum has a philosophy of ‘no question is too silly’.

Bronco Billy...
Thanks for the welcome. It's all still very new to me. The only real question I have at the moment is whether or not I should be self testing my blood glucose levels at this stage. My doctor did not tell me I need to, however I wonder if it would be helpful to observe my progress at some level in between doctor visits.

It is a good idea to cut right back on all sugars and starches, and having a glucose meter to test after eating can show your progress back towards normal. For many type twos the problem is partly insulin resistance and the over production of insulin - if you can get your metabolism back into balance all should go well.

Couldn’t you sleep @Drummer ?

Down here on the South coast we are still seeing high temperatures.
I saw the first glimmer of dawn and heard the birds waking up before I went to bed.

It’s definitely a good idea to self-test if you can. It will help you establish patterns and assess how certain foods affect you. This knowledge will help your long term health.

Thanks. I picked up a BG test kit yesterday. Will try it out tomorrow.

Hello @TM1953USA welcome to the forum,🙂 just catching up on this weeks posts sorry its late.

What I find useful is logging my readings on a simple spreadsheet, as it's easy then to add a formula to work out my 7-day average.

I have a cellphone app Bluetooth paired to the BG meter. It is keeping track and calculating averages.

Started self testing today. Have only taken two readings so far, not really enough to establish patterns yet, though I think they look encouraging. 45 minutes after breakfast read 100mg, just before lunch, read 79 mg. Will take another reading in about 45 minutes which is 2 hours after lunch. Fasting bg at diagnosis was 145 mg.
