Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, I just had a phone call from the surgery to say my bloods have come back and am diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
I have an appointment with the nurse on 9th August and eye test at the hospital on 25th.
At this point in time I have no idea whether I will be on medication, or what diet information I will be given, but this site was recommended to me so thought I would register and say hello.
I am vegetarian so am hoping there will be various options of the diet plans to incorporate this.
I look forward to getting to know you all and sharing experiences.

Hi Sheree, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but the good news is that diabetes is a condition that can be managed well, and once you have got to grips with things there's no reason why you shouldn't feel happy and healthy, and enjoy doing all the things you want to do - and possibly more! 🙂

I'd suggest spending a little time reading Maggie Davey's letter. It's a really good, comprehensive guide to what to expect, and what you can do to manage things well 🙂 Also, I would highly recommend getting a copy of the excellent Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - something many of our members have found extremely helpful and positive, and which really ought to be given to every newly-diagnosed person, in my opinion 🙂

You could make a start, in anticipation of your appointment, by writing a food diary, writing down the amount of carbohydrates in everything you eat and drink. Diabetes is chiefly concerned with carbohydrate consumption - bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, sugary items and things made with flour like pastries and cakes etc., so it is very helpful to get an idea of your current daily consumption. You can then use the diary to look for areas where you might reduce the carb content and supplement your diet with other things - more green veg instead of potatoes, ro example.

Don't feel that everything has to change overnight. This is a long-term process that you are embarking on, and it will take time and patience. But if you have any questions or concerns, we will always be here to help you out whenever we can 🙂

Hello and welcome to the forum Sheree. 🙂

Hi Sheree

I'm vegetarian too and having diabetes too can sometimes be a challenge when eating out but is not insurmountable as long as you like salad, I find! So many places have pasta or risotto as their one and only vegetarian option!
