thanks for all the welcomes and advice, much appreciated. I will be purchasing a Blood Test kit this week.
Quick update - I spoke too soon about lack of side effects from the Metformin, my poor old belly is doing somersaults 24 hours a day right now, hopefully this will subside some time soon.
first real question, which I am sure I've seen the answer to somewhere but now cant find again - What level of Carbs per 100gm would people say is too high? or should I be looking at a total percentage of something oif eating less than 100gm?
Sorry if this answer is easy to find and thanks in advance[/
Hi Andy. When i was diagniosed in April last I was initially prescribed Glucophage metformin the required dose of 2000mg was gradual over 6wks. Unfortunately it didn't agree with me & I suffered an extreme reaction, tummy pains & keeping the loo seat warm! 😱I'll say no more!
So my GP put me on Sukkarto SR (Slow release) metformin tablets, same dose but 1000mg x 2 daily. I suffered the exact same intolerance which kept me housebound so my GP withdrew Sukkarto and said to come back in 2wks. I never did!
I am doing my best now to find a happy medium with that persisting & annoying 'D' and recently put myself on a LCHF diet. (Low carb high fat diet). I'm experimenting really but I'll see how it pans out after 3-4wks. (I must diary that.)
So far as carbs are concerned try to keep them as low as possible. I test my bgl before all meals & post meals 2hrs later - to see what damage has been done to my bgls. For example : which food has either hit the roof or stayed at a reasonable level say between 5-6mmol. Levels often act like a yo-yo to keep us on our toes!
I don't eat white bread anymore but recently starting buying Bergen linseed & soya bread which incidentally is a favourite with forum members. One slice has approx 11g carbs. That is my bread carb allowance for 1 day. Some people here might have 2 slices and their levels aren't affected.
If your carbs go higher after one meal, you can make a carb adjustment on your next one. We are all different, no two D's are the same. I'm sorry but its a case of trial & error, patience, determination and a lot of will power until you reach the place where you want to comfortably be with your blood glucose levels. I also drink anything up to 1000ms daily to help flush out the glucose out when urinating.
I now direct you to the general nessageboard where you will find threads relating to low carb meals, recipes & low carbs etc. I hope you find all of the above helpful in. Good luck & take care
