Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
 Hi I have been newly diagnosed, and have Type 2 diabetes, my last visit to GP he upped my Gliclazide tabs, for 80mg to 160mg as I have trouble keeping my sugar levels down, I have been feeling off colour for a day or two now and my readings have been consistently high 21.9 too 13.8, I am fairly good about what I eat and with xmas on the way have been even more caustious about my intake... do I ned to worry that they are so high much of the time???? Don't want to bother GP with the weather we are having, he probably has enough to do.

Hi Bidefordbelle, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about the problems with the levels - is it possible that you are coming down with something? Feeling off-colour might just be down to your high levels but illness can have an effect on your levels too as you can be more insulin resistant when poorly. Often, higher levels are an early warning of illness, even if you don't feel it yet. I would definitely contact the doctor if you continue to run at those kinds of levels as they won't be helping how you feel and especially with Christmas coming up. Keep yourself well-hydrated and as cosy as possible.

Also, you should bear in mind that it's not always down to how hard you are trying to keep good control. The gliclizide will be encouraging your pancreas to produce more insulin, but if your pancreas is unable to respond sufficiently that isn't your fault so don't feel that the increase in medication means that you have not been trying hard enough. I hope that whatever it is clears up soon and you get much better levels 🙂

Welcome Bidfordbelle.
As you are discovering, being unwell is one of the things that can make blood glucose levels higher than normal. High levles are more serious for type 1s, as they can cause DKA (Diabetic KetoAcidosis), but this can't happen in type 1, as the pancreas continues to produce insulin. Also, it will take a while (at least a few days) before the higher dose of glcazide begins to take effect.

Can you phone your GP surgery for advice - they might prefer that to an appointment? Or NHS Direct (for England or equivalents for Scotland / Wales / Northern Ireland)?

Actually Copepod has reminded me - are you on metformin also? There is a risk of something called lactic acidosis when you are ill, so definitely worth contacting the doctor if you are on metformin as you may be asked to stop taking it for a short while.

Welcome to the forum!🙂

Thanks

Hi everyone thanks for your imput, can not take Metformin as I started on that and had an allergic reaction to it, hence on Gliclazide. I do have other health issues prior to Diabetes and have developed psorisis since. So lots of things to get to grips with. I think I will phone the clinic for a chat with GP or Nurse just to put mind at rest.
I knew I would get good advice from those who have experienced the illnes🙂
Thank-you all for your advice.

My Dad has suffered from psoriasis for 25 years and it got really bad until a couple of years ago when he started having UV light treatment. It doesn't work for everyone, but has completely transformed him - he is now almost completely free of problems 🙂

I hope you are feeling better soon. I'm in the happy position of being able to inject more insulin if my levels get too high, so can imagine it must be very frustrating for you.

Hi Northerner,
See I am so new to Psoriasis I still spell it wrong, GP, is really only treating on problem at a time so Diabetes is his 1st choice, so apart from useless creams and lotions, I have not yet been refered to a dermatologist yet. So pleased your father has had success wtih the UV treatment, its such an embarrasing compliant. Thanks for link to Association will give it a go.

Hi since I wrote in about my diabetes readings being off the scale and not being able to control them. well I took Northerner's advice and saw the GP, he highered my dose of Glicazide.
After three days I still wasn't well and had a rash, so xmas eve morning went back to GP, they took a blood test and rushed it through, went home I had not heard anything so thought it was ok and went about the xmas preperations. 6.30PM GP phoned and was told the hospital had a bed for me and I was to go straight in.... I have Hepatitis do not know if it's A,B or C yet.
So a great day for me and the family..........🙄. I was let out for 48 hours to go back tomorrow for more tests...so it seems it was not the blood sugars out of control but the liver function.. But thanks to the advice here I my not have bothered till after xmas to sort it out, Bidefordbelle

Goodness Bidefordbelle! So sorry to hear that had such a thing to cope with over Christmas. Glad to hear that you are getting treatment for it, I hope you re feeling much better soon. 🙂

Hello again three weeks on spent new years eve in hospitl as blood went haywire again, not a definitive answer yet.. but is all pointing towards a drug induced hepatitis....caused by Gliclazide my diabetes meds, so taken off them and any other meds until link proven, waiting results back from Bristol. I t has been pretty scary and the odds of an reaction is in the millions in fact there are a few documented cases, so lots of bed rest which I can manage having a shower is like doing a days work, but the liver produces this rash with unbearable itching as though you have been dropped in a big nettle patch. But praise goes to my GP he has been so good and it was his research that connected it with the Gliclazide, shot the consultant in the foot.......Well thats the latest and off now for snooze

Goodness, how awful for you! Thank goodness that your GP was able to put two and two together and get you the treatment you need. I hope that you are feeling much better soon - at least you can say you are definitely 'one in a million'! 😱
