Newly diagnosed

I've never heard of them but all my breakfasts are savoury and have been for decades :D
Not sure why you find it boring, just because it's low carb doesn't mean you can't have tasty meals any less than if you were not having low carb, so much choice and recipes out there.
What do you find boring?
I suppose I need to vary my breakfasts a bit more- seem to go in rotation from porridge(berries+seeds/ yougurt+berries+seeds/ eggs+toast!

I tend to have alternative yoghurt, berries and keto granola and either boiled eggs, bacon, egg, mushrooms, bacon, tomato, eggs, scrambled egg and smoked salmon, cheese on toast with poached egg, creamy mushrooms on toast, I seem to cope with 1 slice toast so half with the eggs etc and half with a teaspoon marmalade.

Thanks that’s so helpful - Have you ever monitored your blood sugar levels? Do you get your 1Ac checked more regularly or just yearly?

Yes when I was first diagnosed I got a monitor and tested each morning, before each meal and after 2 hours, than enabled me to decide what meals were tolerated well and what not so based my changes on that information. I had opted for low carb and went for 70g per day, 15 breakfast, 20 for lunch and 25 dinner with the rest for incidentals like milk in drinks. Reducing carb intake all in one go to 70g resulted in some eye issues so in hindsight it would have been better to do it a bit more slowly. I reduced my Hba1C from 50mmol/mol to 42 in 3 months and to 38 in another 6. It has drifted up a bit, my last test was 40, after the first 2 tests at 3 and 6 months I was then on annual tests.
I now occasionally check a few meals but the low carb is my new normal, I am nearly 5 years on.
Exercise has been more difficult as I had an accident 3 and a half years ago damaging my knee so I find walking any distance a struggle as it is still not right.

Thankyou for your reply, I’m learning each day! I’m not so overwhelmed anymore- I just felt so low.
I’m hoping the level goes down on my BT- we’ll see!! The diabetic nurse is so useless - I’ll have to contact them once 3 months is up. But thankyou

Hi- wondered what the reaction is to the new weight loss injections and type 2 diabetes? My bmi is in the normal range but obviously it’s an interesting topic?

Very interesting. I've seen posts elsewhere on the forum about them, some very dramatic success stories and some discussion of side effects.

Despite my massive BMI I'm not currently considering them for myself, but wondering if my not (yet) diabetic daughter might benefit - she has ADHD and really struggles with constant "food noise". To me, the most interesting thing about these drugs is their astounding effect on addictive behaviours.

Hi everyone- just an update: had a very interesting meeting with my GP who was apologetic about the way I had been diagnosed and left. So my plan so far is to see if I can reduce my Hb1ac by October and then that reduces my chloresterol- no need for statins. Ive also been accepted on the X-pert course that runs on November. So far I’ve lost a stone in weight -(10.13 to 9.13).
My question is; should I finger pick before and after meals to see if I’m eating efficiently?
I’m desperate to get my levels down. I’m doing low carb at the moment and very low sugar.

The value of testing before and 2 hours after meal is you can see what meals are tolerated well by keeping the before to after increase to less than 2-3mmol/l or no more than 8-8.5 mmol/l after 2 hours. Initially you will test more but once you establish what meals are OK no real need to test again. It also allows you to try things you like but would otherwise have rejected.
What is your HbA1C now or when it was last tested? You originally mentioned you didn't need to lose weight but have so it is important if you don't want to lose more to keep your protein and healthy fats at a good amount, you have to get your energy form somewhere and in the absence of carbs when on a low carb regime you have to get it from somewhere.
I would concentrate on the carb content and only consider the sugar (just another carb) if you are comparing 2 foods with the same carbs then the better choice would be the one with least sugar.

if you want to learn more about how food choices and how they affect your sugar levels during the day then yes checking before and after meals will help make better choices and hopefully lower your hba1c . Eating a low carb diet helps and try to limit or reduce processed foods and try to eat more whole food and veg . Add spices to your meals too, anyway welcome to the forum and good luck on your journey also if you havent read it in the welcome new ppl thread heres a link anyway good luck https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/tips-i-have-for-fellow-type-2-newbies.116061/

My Hb1ac was 48 April.

That is pretty promising as you are just in the diabetic zone, so you should be able to drop it down a few mmol/mol by October. The low carb looks as if it has worked for you but as I mentioned make sure you are having plenty of protein and healthy fats if you don't want to lose any more weight.

Thanks for the support- I’m feeling so much more positive now that I have a plan to move forwards with. I’m not going to buy a blood testing kit yet- I’ll wait till October and sit through the X- pert course. It’s run by a certified dietitian so it’ll be interesting!! I’ll keep you posted- thanks again it’s a great forum

Obviously it is your choice but many have found it a key element to reducing their HbA1C and keeping track for ongoing good management.
A good analogy is driving a car without a speedometer as you are just guessing whether you are staying within the speed limit just as you dont know if you are eating more carbs in a meal than your body can tolerate.

I’m thinking of trying the Dexcom one+/libre sensor - getting a trial for 10 days to see how I’m reacting.
What are your thoughts on the sensors?

CGMs are great but expensive bits of kit if you have to self fund all the time.
They do have limitations which are very important to understand.

Given the advice is to always double check high or low readings with a finger prick, they are not seen as a replacement.

Sensors/CGMs are a very good way of spotting trends in your Blood Glucose and the more data the better - if you're going to get a free trial I'd go for the Libre 2+ as you will get 15 days of data rather than 10 days with a Dexcom One+

Finger pricks are generally regarded to be more accurate though, and I certainly wouldn't want to pay for one
