Hey,

I'm Nicole, 17 years old. and about a month before my 17th i was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.. My parents realised that i might have it after i suffered during my Gold Duke of Edinburgh award.. i managed to finish it though which i was very proud off.. went to the GP tested my blood sugar, 24.. right not good.. went straight to the hospital, (Missed Sports Day at Collage) :( after about 2 hours spent another 4 learning all about Diabetes.
The first few days were awful, but i think its finally sunk in that i could have something a lot worse and having diabetes wont ruin my life...
2 days after i found out i had diabetes i went on a Biology trip for a week in Wales, and then the day after i came back from that i went to Romania for two weeks helping children there.. i was a bit scared at not having much help but i realised that, it allowed me to forget about it.. and just on with life.. i think that was the best thing for me.. allowed me to understand that i need to be able to inject and look after myself by myself...

well its been about a 6 weeks since i found out i had it.. no one in my family has it.. bit of a shock.. but i'm not letting it beat me :D

Hi there Nicole and a warm welcome from me to this forum,im a type 2 but like you have no other type 2s in the family jst an uncle with type 1 so i was very shocked and scared , with the combined support of my DSN and GP but most of all this place I have come through stronger then ever,What a great thing you did for one so young going to Romania I bet that was an expirience that wll stay with you forever.Anyway anything you need to ask do so no question is regarded as silly here x

An invaluable reference source is Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas. It will explain everything you need to know about living with Type 1. Well, maybe not everything, but for those things it doesn't, you have us! 🙂

Hi Nicky. Welcome to the forum. Like you when I found out I had it (15 years ago now) it was a shock as no one else in my family has it. I love your attitude of not letting it beat you and you are right in saying that you could have something that is a lot worse. xxx

I think that it has to be a good thing to be able to get that balance between controlling your diabetes without it controlling you. You sound like you have that balance right?

Welcome Nicole. Good luck with life with diabetes - and completing the other bits of your D of E Gold.
You sound just the sort of person who would enjoy a BSES Expedition. I've been on 5 to Greenland (twice), Svalbard, Canada and Chile / Falklands / South Georgia, 1 as a Young Explorer, 1 as an Assistant Leader, 2 as Leader [1 with a YE with T1D in my group / "fire"] and 1 as Chief Scientist [with T1D myself]. Also other expeditions / projects in Costa Rica, Mexico, Australia, Indonesia; independent travel particularly in Latin America, Europe, Scandinavia, Morocco, Middle East etc.
If anyone tells you not to do something, due to diabetes or anything else, there is often a way round the problem - and many of us on these boards have found ways, so please ask.

Couldn't agree with this more - there are very very few things you actually can't do (such as join the army) - the other things just need people who have the know-how to get around it!

Welcome to the forum. I think it's brilliant how positive you are being so newly diagnosed I was a nervous wreck the first year or so, I really admire your attitude towards it all x
 
I'm sorry to know that you was dx but I love your attuide, it's so positive - it's the best way to go 🙂 you have showed you can control diabetes not let it control you, well done and good luck.

My son has been diagnosed recently too and he is determined to just get on with everything too ..I am very proud of him and I am sure your parents are very proud of you too..well done x
 
Hi Nicky,

I'm nineteen and I've been diabetic since I was five years old. There's not much you cannot do with it. I did D of E but we ploughed that for other reasons. If you want I'll pass on my MSN or Facebook stuff if you want to chat to someone roughly your age.

hey!
Im 19 on monday! and i found out i had diabetes, type 1 on my last day of primary school, i thought i would get used to it in the 6 weeks holidays! but obviously diabetes is not as simple as that lol. I think it was because i was so young. Nobody in my family has type 2 diabetes, so they are still not sure how i got it lol never mind! Give me a message if you want Claire x
