Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
hi
Told over the phone I have diabetes by GP after blood tests
and told to collect prescription for metaformin from reception
Nothing else explained to me
Is this the normal way ?
Am 50 male overweight

Hi and welcome BB gosh that's awful being told over the phone that little contact is so bad at least i was told face to face .id certainly call and get an appointment and make gp aware your a little annoyed of your treatment x

What I'm struggling with is the mind field of info out there, and not all of it agrees with one another, its so difficult to know what's the best to do.
My two points of interest are carbs and monitoring my sugars...any advice please?

Hi welcome also sandy it makes me so sad as well as annoyed that things are still just as shoddy for newly diagnosed these days i was dx on 09 and gave leaflets and a book

Welcome to the forum, blindbeggar and Sandy64.
Being told over phone is certainly not ideal. By the way, the medication is spelt "metformin" - I mention that so you can search online for its name.
There's lots of information on these boards about blood glucose testing and carbohydrate content in diet. The other key features in managing type 2 diabetes are exercise / activity and reducing body weight if overweight.

Not sure if it's the normal way blindbeggar ...but that's how it happened for me too... and I daresay others here...must be a shock for you...particularly with such a 'brusque' introduction...fortunately you have found your way here where support/advice will be available...when you say nothing do you mean absolutely nothing?...were you given any indication of your blood sugar levels...whether to make a further appointment to see your GP or DSN (diabetes nurse)...the availability of education courses...if not I wouldn't be surprised...that can & does happen...can you tell us a little more about yourself if that's not too intrusive...when/how were you diagnosed...any idea of your BG levels...what dose of Metformin you take...did you have an HbA1c test (that is a blood test which indicates what your BG has been for the preceding three months)...do you know anything about testing your blood yourself...if you can answer those questions it would help other members make suggestions...offer the right support...many type 2's find themselves in the same position...however...with the right advice things can/do get better...lots of support available here...ask as many questions as you need to...there is so much information available to help you manage/control your diabetes...keep us updated...I'm sure other members will be along shortly to advise you.

Hi, I am also new to this, and pretty much word for word happend to me on monday:(
Hi Sandy...I've just replied to the initial thread posted by blindbeggar...I would repeat exactly the same comments to you...might be easier if you post a thread of your own..in the 'newbies' section....that way you can ask specific questions related to your own difficulties...without any overlap...it is hard to get your head around all the information available initially...manage/control your diabetes...but...it is perfectly 'doable' once you have the right advise/support...available here in vast quantities.

Hi, not sure how to post as you say, I started a new post but have I jumped into someone elses post?

Hi Sandi...believe you may have...it happens...don't worry...just go to the General Thread...click on that...you'll see the newly (newbies) diagnosed section...click on that...then click on new thread...voila...although...I am officially technologically incompetent...so apologies if I have that wrong...if so...hopefully someone will be along to correct me😱😱😱.
