Just been diagnosed type 2 and the diabetes nurse put the fear of god in me. Blood sugar level was 53. What are your suggestions for diet?
Hi and welcome, firstly don’t panic, you're just over the blood sugar limit of 48 that gives you a diagnosis of T2 diabetes, there’s no need for any radical change, just a few lifestyle alterations will probably bring you into a much better glucose range..
I was in your place around 1.5 yrs ago HbA1c of 77, and told exactly what you been told recently , I was overweight , and eating the wrong diet.
What we need to do as diabetics is to limit the carbohydrates in our diet, there are 2 main groups of carbs there’s the simple sugars and the more complex starches.
So you need limit the simple sugars found in anything sweet. Cakes, biscuits , sweets, chocolate etc etc, but also the starches found in grain products which our bodies quickly convert into glucose ie wheat, rice, root veg potatoes etc.
Proteins and healthy fats are more tolerated .. so counter intuitively it’s better to have bacon & eggs for breakfast than cereal followed by toast & jam..
If you can start making these changes to your diet and upping your exercise a bit you should see your BG levels fall quite quickly.
I suggest you read Maggie Daveys letter below it’s a useful intro for newly diagnosed T2. diabetics.
