Hi and welcome, firstly don’t panic, you're just over the blood sugar limit of 48 that gives you a diagnosis of T2 diabetes, there’s no need for any radical change, just a few lifestyle alterations will probably bring you into a much better glucose range..
I was in your place around 1.5 yrs ago HbA1c of 77, and told exactly what you been told recently , I was overweight , and eating the wrong diet.
What we need to do as diabetics is to limit the carbohydrates in our diet, there are 2 main groups of carbs there’s the simple sugars and the more complex starches.
So you need limit the simple sugars found in anything sweet. Cakes, biscuits , sweets, chocolate etc etc, but also the starches found in grain products which our bodies quickly convert into glucose ie wheat, rice, root veg potatoes etc.
Proteins and healthy fats are more tolerated .. so counter intuitively it’s better to have bacon & eggs for breakfast than cereal followed by toast & jam..
If you can start making these changes to your diet and upping your exercise a bit you should see your BG levels fall quite quickly.
I suggest you read Maggie Daveys letter below it’s a useful intro for newly diagnosed T2. diabetics.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Step one, don’t panic! Step two, make a cuppa, get comfy and read as much as you can here, everything you need to know is on these pages, it’s not text book drivel but real lived experience that will soon bring those numbers back in range for you. When you are ready, ask any questions you might have and you will get all the support you could wish for fro all of us that have been where you are now :D

Welcome to the forum. You will find loads of advice on here, it's all first hand experience. Like Anitram I had a reading of 110 so if you can make just a few changes you will be ok. There are plenty of things you can still eat, try and eat fresh meat and veg. As was said earlier cut out stuff like white bread, i personally cant eat it now as i find it so bland. Good luck.

You might find that getting a blood glucose meter will help you decide what changes to make.
Your Hba1c level is not all that high - what the nurse thought the benefit would be in alarming you I cannot fathom, but I think it was totally unnecessary. From my own experience a few weeks could put you back into normal figures.
With a meter you can see how much you need to cut down - swapping to brown carbs is unlikely to help very much as they are still carbs, and that is what we can't cope with. Reducing sugar is probably a good thing anyway, but the starches are just as important to throttle back on.
I got the Tee 2 meter from Spirit Health, as it is cheap to run - all very well getting a free meter but then having to pay high prices for the supplies means being restricted on how often you can use it. There are other meters which are cheap, but the tee 2 seems well reported on, and I think it is accurate, from my own experience.
