Hi everyone,

Firstly I apologise for any spelling mistakes, just had my first eye screening today and things are a bit blurry!
I was diagnosed with T2 in August and my ultimate aim is to try and reverse it. Going to be a long hard road and Christmas is not going to help but I'm going into the festive season a stone lighter than I was when first diagnosed.

If you feel able to share a bit more info, people can offer further advice, eg: do you need to lose more weight, are you on any medication, what was your Hb1Ac level when diagnosed, etc.

A stone off is a fantastic achievement and something to really build on.

Yes, Christmas is a challenge for sure but if you are struggling then always look back on what you have achieved and not what you're still aiming for.

My HbA1ac was 69 when first diagnosed, and weight loss and exercise was advised along side Metformin and Forxiga. Mainly bought on by a sedentary life style and poor diet really.
I go for my 2nd blood test tomorrow ready for a 6 month review in January with my GP. When you go for your blood tests do you fast or not, I fasted for my first one, which was difficult as they couldn't get me in for my test until late afternoon!

Thank you! I took up skipping after seeing a few videos about it and thought I'd give it a try, may be able to reverse my diabetes but will probably need new knees!

If it is just your HbA1C then it doesn't need to be fasting, if they have included a cholesterol and lipid panel then it may be but even then not always needed.
You mention the two medications but not what dietary changes you have also made as medication can only do so much and it is still needed to reduce the intake of carbohydrates as it is all carbs that convert to glucose so it is no good taking meds and still eating the foods that will increase blood glucose.

Unfortunately familial cholesterol is also in the mix, so it's been an increase in fruit and veg and fish/chicken. I also have heartbreakingly cut out milk chocolate and swapped for dark chocolate in moderation and taken to eating plain almonds as a snack before meals (again in moderation as I read too many are bad for you??)
I used to skip breakfast as my job has early starts but I'm now having a bowl of porridge with blueberries in daily.
I'll have a look on my bloods request to see if they are checking for cholesterol this time round

Quite a few people find that reducing carbs improves their cholesterol even though they do not have low fat products. Why are you snacking before meals?
Having filling meals with plenty of protein and healthy fats, there are some types of fats which will reduce cholesterol and small portions of any high carb foods.
As you are new you may not have seen this link for a low carb approach which many have found successful but you will see there are still plenty of foods you can have, https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/ It is based on the suggested no more than 130g carbs not just sugar per day it is not NO carbs.

I’m just glad that you had your scan,
yes the eye drops sometimes are a minor thing that can bother some people sometimes
I look at it as a inconvenience that comes sometimes with retinal scans

I have myself been having retinal scans far more than most Diabetics do
as often as every 6 weeks
plus having a few different treatments for an eye condition for the last 10 years, (due to previously poor control & missing my retinal screening in a previous life) before I got my levels stable

In fact, currently I’m replying to your post, and looking through just one eye,
however the good news is I shall be having surgery to the other eye between Christmas & New Year

and I should be fine - eyesight should be as good as before (possibly better)
you will find this forum full of people who have been through all sorts of Diabetes related complications, but mostly just a useful resource
 
@Simon F we are in a similar situation. I was asked to see a HCP because my cholestral had crept up. I asked for a diabetes test when realised they hadn't tested my annual blood sample but was still shocked. 69 at start of July 64 at end. I went for mainly fish cheese eggs and veg and lost a stone and a half. I was put on Forixa in September by which time I was 58. However I have found it stressful worrying about sufficient carbs and my weight loss has almost stopped although ideally I should lose another 12 kgs. I was 51 at end of September and had a blood test today. I am peeing a lot which means broken sleep whereas when I was just on metformin I felt very well. I had foot check today which went well.
