Type 2
Hi
I have just been diagnosed with type 2 and placed on metformin. This is all so scary but I need to know how I checky blood sugar levels. Thanks

Welcome to the forum, you will get lots of advice here but it would help if you say a bit more about your diagnosis, did you have symptoms that led you to your GP. What was your HbA1C which is the test that gives the average blood glucose over the previous 3 months and anything over 47mmol/mol will give a diabetes diagnosis but how far above that will indicate how much work you will need to do. I assume it is quite high if metformin has been prescribed but dietary changes are equally if not more important.
You ask about checking your blood glucose and you can do that by getting a home testing blood glucose monitor. Unless you are lucky you will have to self fund but it is well worth the investment. Ones with the cheapest test strips are the GlucoNavii or Spirit TEE2 but shop around as prices do change. On line is generally cheaper than the pharmacy.
Making good use of the monitor can be very useful in telling you what foods and meals you can tolerate by testing before you eat and again after 2 hours, aiming at an increase of no more than 2-3mmol/l or when your levels come down then no more than 8-8.5mmol/l after 2 hours.
People also check their morning /fasting level to monitor progress day to day, week to week, etc or if they feel unwell.
Have a look at this link for ideas for modifying your diet.as well as some do's and don'ts and some good explanation. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/

Hi @Shazza2167 and welcome to the forum. It's completely normal to feel scared, but the fear subsides! The forum is a really great place to get advice and support, especially when our forum users know so much about diabetes and how to manage it. What were your HbA1C levels, and how are you feeling about it now? Feel free to tell us a bit more about your symptoms and how you're feeling on metformin!

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis @Shazza2167 :(

It’s perfectly normal to feel overwhelmed by the news of your diagnosis. Try not to be disheartened about your diagnosis, many people on the forum later reflect that their diagnosis became a catalyst which prompted them to make positive changes towards a healthier and more active life. Perhaps changes that they had been intending to make for years. Were you given the result of your HbA1c at diagnosis? This is a measure of your glucose levels over the previous 3-4 months. There’s more info about HbA1c here)

If you’d like to check your levels for yourself, the most affordable and reliable meters that members here have found are the SD Gluco Navii or the Spirit Tee2 - which both have test strips at around £10 for 50
