Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi everyone,
I’m new to the forum as I was only diagnosed with Type 1 last week. I have the added complication that I’m in the early stages of my first pregnancy and the diabetes was only found because of the tests at my first midwife appointment. Since then it has been a whirlwind of blood tests, urine samples and hospital appointments!
Finding it all very overwhelming at the moment but thankfully have a supportive husband and family, and so far the diabetes team/antenatal team have been fab!
If anyone has any advice (particularly around dealing with T1 whilst pregnant) or you just want to pop by to say hello, this would be very much appreciated!

Hi and welcome. Diabetes and pregnancy can mean complications but it also means you get really good care and are seen frequently to check on you and the baby. Have you started insulin and carb counting? It’s a lot to take in to begin with (and can be hard if you have pregnancy brain fog) so use your husband and family as support and get them on board with providing you food and doing your carb counts for you. It will soon become habit to do the testing etc that you need. We’re here to support and to answer any questions. Good luck!

Hi, welcome and congratulations on your pregnancy.
It is pretty overwhelming being diagnosed with diabetes at the best of times but in the early stages of pregnancy it must be even more mind blowing. It is good to hear that you have a supportive team who are helping you through this process. I believe pregnant diabetics are monitored and supported much more closely than the rest of us, so that will hopefully ensure that you have a smooth and safe journey and a happy outcome at the end of it. We have at least a couple of members who are pregnant at the moment and will hopefully be along to welcome you and swap notes.

Hi, thank you for your message. Yes, I’ve been on insulin for about a week now, injecting Levemir at night and NovoRapid before meals. I had a review today, my sugar levels are heading in the right direction but not where they should be yet so they’ve changed my dosage slightly. Have also adapted diet and spoken to Dietician so hopefully on the right track with carbs. That’s good to know as I’m finding the new routine hard at the moment!

Thank you Barbara. Last week felt like the worst week of my life - it was so overwhelming and I felt low all week. I had a better day with my sugar levels yesterday and a review at the hospital today so feeling much more positive. Yes thankfully I’m having weekly reviews at the moment, with telephone contact every few days so feeling very supported! Just worried about the long road ahead of me and of course worried about baby too!

Hello, and welcome! Wow, what a time you have had. How many weeks pregnant are you? Have you had any scans? I'm now 36 weeks, but I had the advantage of 12 years to get used to T1 beforehand! But all is going well for me, just thought that might provide some reassurance that T1 and pregnancy is do-able. I have had about 8 scans and 4 weekly appointments with the diabetes team. The thing I have found helpful to reduce high BG after meals is to eat some cheese or peanuts before the carbs, to slow down absorption. Have a browse of the carbs and recipes section to get some ideas for meals.

Best of luck and feel free to pop in with questions any time!

Welcome @Catch22 .

What a shocker, but I am pleased to hear that you have a good support team around you.
As others have reassured you they have managed pregnancies with T1.
I can only offer support regarding managing T1, as I was a much later starter than you.

Keep in touch and keep asking absolutely any questions that you have.
Plenty of people here to help.
