Type 2
Hi I am 41 and have just been diagnosed with type 2. My BG was 17.1 this week and hba1c is 97.
I am after some practical advice on what I should and shouldn't eat. As a family we normally eat a lot of pasta based meals or rice or potatoes and now I feel concerned that I won't just be able to make normal family meals.
Many thanks

You can still make the same meals for your family, but contrive to replace the high carb component for yourself - my husband still gets such things as macaroni cheese when I have cauliflower cheese.
Cauliflower is a good low carb vege to fill the place of potato or other high carb food - I always pick up a couple of bags of frozen cauliflower or broccoli, along with low carb mixed veges - avoid those with sweetcorn as they are a grain, and so high carb.
I also get bags of frozen fruit which are low carb.
My BG at diagnosis was the same as yours, but it soon dropped and my Hba1c became non diabetic very quickly. Low carb is surprisingly powerful, just on its own - but do be sure to have some salt, and I find that a multivitamin and mineral tablet a couple of times a week seems to be a good idea to help with cramps. If I forget then I tend to get lower leg cramps in the night - though it may be more to do with the glass of water than the tablet.

Hi Sammielou, welcome 🙂 I agree with Dummer, I never thought I could cut the carbs but I now can’t imagine ever eating them again!! I have chilli, curry and everything else but without the stodgy stuff.....grated cheese on my chilli, cauliflower rice with my curry, love a good stir fry 😛 guilt free fry ups, Burgen bread for my bacon butty or toast with peanut butter......so many yummy foods 😉
What I did find within a week was not just that my bg was dropping but I stopped feeling bloated after meals, was sleeping better.... within a month my daughter said I was less moody 😱

Shredded or diced cabbage is a good pasta replacement

I get a small savoy or white cabbage, slice it into inch thick discs, place on a open dish or tray, then spray with olive oil and grate black pepper over each disc.
Place in a low to medium oven and wait for it to soften right through.
My husband doesn't eat cabbage - I have to tell him that he doesn't like it several times a week - perhaps it would just be kinder to buy a bigger cabbage.

Excellent option @Drummer I think @Lanny would agree.😎

I like broccoli rice or even just have the florets if I can’t get any: cauliflower rice being more common & easier to get but, I find it a bit bitter! I’ve always loved the slightly metallic taste of broccoli, I think I can taste the iron in it, that other people may not like!
