At risk of diabetes
Hi there I’ve been recently told I’m pre diabetic by the gp (my level was 45) but then not really given much info. I’m slightly freaking over what I can and can’t eat being a bread/carb lover and also although I’m not much of a drinker I do want to have a glass or two of something tomorrow. Can anyone tell me is any alcohol allowed now? If so is red wine ok (my preference) or something like gin and slimline? Any info very gratefully received

Welcome to the forum
A pre diabetes diagnosis is a wake up call to review your diet and look to reducing carbohydrates as it is all carbs which convert to glucose but there is no need to panic and take time to look at the information available and make a sensible plan the is sustainable rather than a quick fix.
You are lucky in wines and spirits with diet mixers are the best choices for drinks and best to avoid fruit juices and things like J2O and full sugar drinks.
A bit of reading for you to give you some ideas and a starting point for making some changes is this link, https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/ which is an approach which many have found successful.
You are in the middle of the prediabetic zone so some modest changes are likely all that will be needed.
But do not worry and enjoy your Christmas.

Hi @Millyjack and welcome to the forum.

A few glasses of red wine will be fine

Have a good read around the forum and ask as many questions as you wish, but at all costs, enjoy Xmas.

Alan 😉

@Leadingslights has summed things up. Absolutely no need to panic and bin all the things you have planned for Christmas.

What would be sensible, after the holidays, is to spend a little time on the forum and in the learning zone to get a perspective on things and then work out your best way forward. Ask questions and you will get lots of ideas from our members who between them have centuries of experience of living with diabetes in all its guises.

Merry Christmas and see you in the new year!

Thank you so much for the welcome and your reply Leadinglights, that’s all so reassuring! I’ll definitely have a look at the link, I’ve been told about Freshwell before. I’ll have a good read and then make a proper plan once Christmas Day is done. I definitely feel a bit calmer now Merry Christmas

Hi Alan and thank you for the welcome and your kind reply. It’s so reassuring to hear from people who have experience with diabetes, and that I can still have a couple of glasses of red!. Have a great Christmas.

Hi Docb thank you for the welcome and your kind reply. Again, it’s so reassuring to hear from people who have experience. I’ll definitely have a good read after Christmas is done and work out at proper plan. Merry Christmas!
