Hi Everyone, I have been a type 2 diabetic for several months now but have just been told if i dont control my eating habis i will be on insulin!, Of course i am very frightened by the thought of this so i am going to try and control what i eat, The thing is im finding it hard to work out what i can/cannot eat, and suggestions please,

Hi Snowy and welcome

I am going to ask @everydayupsanddowns to move your post to it's own thread so that it will get more responses than here on a thread about Cornetto's which is probably not helpful.

Basically you need to reduce your intake of carbohydrates to improve your BG levels. That is not just sugar and sweet stuff but complex (starchy) carbs too like bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, breakfast cereals anything made with flour, so pastry/pies, batter etc
What you can eat without any worries is meat, fish, eggs, cheese, mushrooms, plenty of veg, and salad, particularly green leafy veg like cabbage and kale and brussel sprouts but broccoli and cauliflower are ideal too. Many of us boil and mash cauliflower (with a good dollop of cream cheese and perhaps a spoon of mustard), instead of mashed potato. Goes well with sausages or gammon Cooks quicker, no peeling and mashes easier. Works well as a topping for shepherd's/cottage pie with a liberal dusting of grated cheese of course. Cauliflower can also be used (grated) or you can buy it as "Cauliflower rice" to have with curry or chilli instead of normal rice. Takes just a few seconds in the microwave to cook.

Try a cooked breakfast instead of cereal or toast or I enjoy creamy Greek Natural yoghurt with a few berries and seeds. Low fat products tend to be higher in carbs than the full fat version, so having the full fat version of yoghurt and coleslaw and mayonnaise and cheese will be better for your diabetes than the low fat versions. I now have my morning coffee with double cream instead of semi skimmed milk. Less carbs and tastes twice as good.

Hope that gives you a few ideas, but if you give us an idea of what you usually eat, we can perhaps make suggestions as to where you can make low carb swaps.

Welcome to the forum @Snowy

Sorry to hear about your diabetes.

I wish HCPs wouldn’t use insulin as some sort of ‘threat’ - gives out completely the wrong message! Insulin is just a form of medication, which helps some people with diabetes manage their blood glucose levels who need it. It’s not some sort of ‘punishment’ for misbehaviour!

It might help members make suggestions if you shared a general idea of the sorts of things you eat during the day?

And don't hold back on what you do like to eat, in preference to what somebody or another has said is a healthier choice. No point whatever in forcing yourself to eat something that makes you heave and no point whatever us suggesting you do eat it - but unless you tell us your likes and dislikes, it's purely guesswork and we could type suggestions until our fingers drop off, for all the good it would do!

Hi. Yes do reduce the carbs in your diet. Providing insulin to a T2 with excess weight can be counter-productive. A T2 may have insulin resistance and have excess insulin in the body. Adding more may not help but some GPs don't understand T2 and the way insulin works. There is a weekly injectable e.g. Trulicity that can help reduce excess weight as a T2.
