Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi

My name is Nicola and I'm 50 and live in North Yorkshire.

I was borderline Gestational diabetes when I had my boys 19 and 22 years ago and my blood sugars have been unsteady since.

Last November I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and am having chemotherapy. The steroids have caused me to become Type 2 Diabetic.

I am starting Metformin and finger picking as soon as I get over the first few days of this cycle.

I look forward to learning more from you all.

Hi @Nannynic71 and welcome to the forum.
Steroids are well known for increasing Blood Glucose, and make it more difficult to control.
Congratulations on deciding to monitor your BG via finger pricking.
SO far as meals are concerned all carbohydrates digest into glucose, not just sweet things but starchy things as well. But our bodies all handle carbs slightly differently so some of us hardly react to certain foods where others get a big BG spike form that same food in the same quantity at the same time of day. - Yes, quantity of carbs, what they are eaten with and the time of day can all influence the resulting Blood Glucose .
This means that the only way to find out what works well for your body and what to avoid, is to keep a food diary, test each meal and record the food, quantity, time of day and BG increase until you can predict the resulting BG for that food.

Breakfast is the easiest meal to get sorted because we tend to have almost the same food every day. Breakfast foods are also mainly a poor choice for T2 Diabetics (I'm thinking cereals, toast, fruit juice). Yes, even whole oat porridge and an Orange juice is unhealthy for a T2 Diabetic since it converts into a large amount of glucose to give a bad start to the day.
A healthy breakfast is easy for most T2D because eggs contain only traces of carbohydrates, similarly meat, fish, and most cheeses.

Welcome to the forum @Nannynic71

Sorry to hear that your breast cancer treatment has provided you with a little extra ‘present’ :(

Have your Drs made any suggestion about the possibility of things easing up when the course of steroids finishes, or is your understanding that your diabetes is now a bit of a fixture? It sounds a little like your metabolism was struggling a little beforehand too?

Hope you find the Metformin treats you kindly, and you don’t get too much in the way of gastric upheaval. 😳

Welcome to the forum!
