Hi,

I was diagnosed yesterday with Type, I was wondering if anyone can help. It's my christmas do at workmon saturday and we arr going for a Chinese and I am unsure what to do whether I stay at home or I go but not sure what I can eat?

Thanks Bev

Hi Bev and welcome but sorry you got a Type 1 diagnosis that causes you to be here.

How did your diagnosis come about? Did you land up in hospital with DKA or was it a slightly less traumatic route?

I am going for a Chinese banquet on Thurs and they are quite tricky but that is no reason not to go. I assume you are not yet carb counting?
Which insulins are you using? Presumably they have started you off on fixed doses.... if so, how much?
I follow a low carb way of eating so I go very steady on the rice and noodles. Also, I restrict the number of prawn crackers to a sensible level but enjoy the soup. Have more duck and cucumber in less pancakes and just one or two of the battered items like crispy wantons and spring roles. I inject a reasonable amount of insulin at the start of the meal and do a correction later, but I am guessing you will not have been instructed to do corrections yet.

I think it may just be that you need to be more careful about what and how much you eat and what you drink.... Spirits with low calorie mixers and dry wine should have minimal impact on your levels whereas beer and cider will cause BG increase. Go steady with the alcohol as well as the food because the alcohol can affect your ability to manage your diabetes safely..... basically, moderation is the key but certainly go and enjoy yourself! Just don't go mad! Drinking plenty of water afterwards will also be a very good idea both to help lower your levels if they are too high and overcome the MSG hangover the next day..

Hello @bevjohnson

If you’re Type 2 as your avatar says, then you can definitely go. Just watch the carbs - noodles, rice, bread, cake, etc etc. Either have a very small amount of rice/noodles or none at all. Also, watch out for the sweet sauces. Some of them are shockingly high carb. Choose a non-sweet sauce instead. Fill up on the meat and veg and eat sparingly of the carbs.

We had chinese take-away delivered on Saturday. I have found the house special chow mein doesn't give me that much of a BG spike. I eat the meats, prawns and veggies first then have some of the very fine noodles that come with it, I can never finish it all anyway My waking BG had been 6.6 and my post meal reading was 7.6 - but that may not be the same for every T2. Some have suggested something like chicken and broccoli to others, but if you go easy on the rice and noodles, hopefully you won't spike too much.

Hi Bev, welcome to the forum.

Glad that you've found us early as getting to grips with things early on can have a positive impact.

Regarding Chinese, I would go but maybe have a look at the menu before hand and pick your meal.

You could go for steamed options and things that are low in carbs and sugar. Things like stir fry's, steamed veg, meat and fish prepared without added sauces and batter are good options. Crispy duck pancakes, dry ribs, wings and so forth are tasty, just go easy on the rice, noodles and sweet and sour dishes.

None of us, no matter how long we've been diagnosed, get it right all of the time but as long as you're being mindful, drinking lots of water and get some exercise in such as gentle walks then you'll be on the right track.

My go to Chinese meals are stir fry veggies with cashew nuts, and chow mein with prawns or chicken (not battered).

same here (with chicken chow mein) 🙂
(just because its ok for some, may not be ok for all)

I guess it depends if they are having a banquet to celebrate the festive season or ordering individual meals. I had assumed they would be having a banquet with it being a work group and special occasion.
